General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: what could have been done?
« on: February 18, 2016, 04:02:27 PM »
Appreciate the work you have done in Maine Slim, our job as dealers should be education as much as sales and I know we both agree on that. I can't speak to Maine politics, but on a federal level we did have an opportunity to comment on NSPS and still only about 1800 comments. Maybe folks in states that already adopted phase 2 felt no need to comment keeping the number artificially low but still I thought there would be many more from Wisconsin alone. States  like MN, MI and WI that had not adopted phase 2 before federal implementation already did a good job regulating at a local level so I feel such low public input hurt us. No doubt there are many unscrupulous dealers that will sell a boiler to anyone no matter the circumstance and many owners that burn all kinds of nasty things and do not have the common courtesy to respect their neighbors. This has always been the biggest issue and should have been the focus, not a one size fit all federal overreach. Burning wood is independence so anytime it is threatened we have to speak up. More public comment may not have done any good but the small number was disappointing.

The NSPS was a long and drawn out process, but like many EPA Regs there was a 90 day public comment period. I heard that EPA received only about 1800 comments. Over 40 million people live in the great lakes area alone, I realize many are city folk but REALLY 1800 comments? I thought there would be at least 100x's that. I commented twice, once as a business and once as an individual. Some past regs have gotten over 200,000 comments, not enough public comments EPA will not listen.

Crow is correct. P&M uses a gravity damper. When the blower kicks on it blows the damper open and when the blower kicks off the damper simply falls shut, no springs or solenoids involved. Check the connections in the junction box, there is a wiring diagram in the manual. If that is not it jump the blower with an extension cord like Crow said, if it still will not start you need to replace it.

Portage & Main / Re: Should I upgrade from a cb 6048. To a 3444
« on: February 04, 2016, 06:34:41 PM »
Where do you live? You may not need that big of a boiler. I would consider weather the houses have full basements, quality of windows, how many people between the two houses for hot water, ect. I have replaced more than a few 6048's with 3444's. Most of my customers report 30% to 40% wood savings using the same moisture content wood with the same heating load. If the boiler is oversized you will not realize as big of a savings. The bigger the heating load the more you will save.

A lot of good advise above. The 3444 can pull twice the load that you have, anywhere you can dump some heat? Open a window, throw a unit heater in the pole shed, greenhouse, hot tub? With an oversized boiler work it any way you can especially in mild weather.

Try letting your wood burn down a little more or you can open the ash pan door to get a draft going before you open the firepot door. Do not forget to close your ash pan door when you finish loading or you will soon be hearing a train whistle!

I agree with mlappin. Also your water jacket is only 90 gallons, many boilers of the same btu output have 2 or 3 x's the volume so they can stratify more easily. I have been having all my customers take off the bottom for the last 3 years or so since this issue was first brought to my attention the first year the Ultimizer was introduced. It will work and you will get plenty of heat. Try it and let us know.

Hi blmike and timothy, have you had a chance to reverse your pumps? Don't do it if the pump is in the back of the boiler on the top port, don't want you to run it dry and burn it out. If any of the pumps are in a building try it, the boiling will go away then replumb when you can. Let us know if it works.

Darn computer, Thanks schoppy, my point is that a carbon tax is very likely to happen in the US and other countries within the next decade, even many industries are calling for one and there are several models. Government keeps all, government keeps some or government returns all to the taxpayer to defray the higher cost of fossil fuels. If and when it comes I hope everyone fights for the latter.
