Chimney who covers in off season?
« on: September 01, 2011, 07:53:15 PM »

Now that i have a OWB I tend to notice that most people do not cover there chimney thru the summer months it took me 2 weeks to get mine covered and cleaned out last spring and in that time there was corrision already getting a hold I can't imagine what it would look like after letting the unit sit open all summer. Any thoughts on this?

My neighbor has a ncb175, there is rust pouring out his ash pan door from the water standing in the bottom of the stove, full of ash and corrosive stuff!  Sad thing is thst he has a
stainless cap and pipe laying beside his stove but won't put it on.

Your right tho, it's nuts, you can only clean em out so good, if it gets moist it
turns the ash into some very corrosive stuff and
eats fireboxes up.

Just the chimney cap. I look inside once a month to make sure it's still dry. And it has been.

Considering some of the heavy rains we have had, I'd say it's doing it's job.

We live in the west at 8600' and the climate is low humidity, but I cover mine regardless.

I have covered ours for the 5 summers that it has been in our back yard. So little time to do it for the piece of mind it gives me.

5 Gallon buck as well with a 12ft poll. Allows it to vent but keeps it dry.
