Equipment / Troy bilt 27 ton splitter
« on: October 17, 2015, 03:03:54 PM »
My splitter has been working fine for 3 years.  All of a sudden It seems like it does not have any pressure in the hydraulics.  Not sure if it is a 2 stage pump but it will split wood that is clear but as soon as I get into some knots it will not split it.  Also there is not enough pressure to return the handle when you return the ram.  It seems to me to be the pump but if anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. I did check the fluid and it is fine.  Thanks

Empyre / Blower motor crapped out
« on: April 14, 2015, 03:11:51 PM »
Well I guess it is time to shut down.  Went out this morning and the blower motor crapped out.  This is my second year.  I am going to see if I can find a different blower motor to replace it with.  The one I have is a fasco does anyone have suggestions on a better motor.  I was thinking maybe dayton makes something I could replace it with.

Plumbing / Temp drop on radiant heat
« on: February 14, 2014, 09:28:00 PM »
I am currently running a empyre pro 400.  In my barn which is 5000 sq ft I have radiant infloor heat in the slab on the first floor and staple up under the sub floor on the second floor.  When I have more than one large zone call for heat the return temps drop significantly.  My temp can be at 180 and if I have 2 of the larger zones call at the same time the "optimizer" or thermostatic valve will kick in so the temp going back to the boiler won't drop below 140.  I know this is protecting the boiler which is fine but just wondering what I can do to try and prevent this.  I am currently running the boiler at 180 with a 5 degree differential.  I have 1" Logstor feeding the barn.  It is 130 foot run one way from the boiler to the 80 plate heat exchanger exchanger.  I have six zones of heat with the 2 larger zones have 8 loops of approx 280' of 1/2 pex.  I am running a Armstrong 9.2 pump.  The run from the boiler to the house has 1-90 and 6-45 degree bends.

Just wondering if I put a larger pump in would that help or should I just live with it.  It just seems to take a long time for the boiler to recover after this occurs.

Thanks for any help.

Plumbing / Questions about piping for futue owb
« on: March 10, 2013, 10:46:44 AM »
I am getting ready to install an OWB this summer.  I got my grapple load of wood and got that all cut.  I am trying to get ready for the plumbing part of the install.  This is for my barn.  I have six zones of radiant heat and domestic hot water.  I have attached a sketch showing my current heating system with a gas wall hung boiler.  I am just wondering if I can just extend off the manifold to a plate exchanger and run the system pump that is currently there 24/7 through the wall hung boiler or do I need to be able to bypass the wall hung boiler when not in use?  That boiler is 225,000 BTU wondering what size plate exchanger I should use?

The barn is new construction with 2x6 walls and good insualtion.  The size is 60 x 44 two floors.  I have radiant in the slab on the first floor and under the wood floor on the second floor.

I would greatly apprciate any help with this.  If I am leaving out any information let me know.

Thanks

Plumbing / hydraulic seperator
« on: January 05, 2013, 07:06:47 AM »
I am planning to install gasification OWB and plumb to my wall hung boiler for radiant heat and DHW.  I want to have it so I can still the run the wall hung boiler in the summer for DHW.  Is a hydraulic seperator the best way to go?

With only 115 gal water jacket do you need extra water storage to run efficiently.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Portage and Main Optimizer 350
« on: December 30, 2012, 11:04:18 AM »
I am looking to buy a OWB.  I live in NH and want to heat my barn and log home.  Around 8000 sq ft. total.  I have force HW in house and radiant in the barn.  I was looking at the P&M 350 but heard they were having problems with their firebox rusting out.  Does anyone know about this and is anybody running the 350.
