Heatmor / Re: Contemplating an OWB
« on: September 16, 2010, 06:59:16 PM »
What I tell people that are interested in a outside wood furnace is..You gotta like doing wood and its a expense up front.. I burn about 9 -10 cord  in a 7 month period for heat and hot water..Like WilleG said dont let the sales guy  tell you 24 hr burn. I know a lot of people that own OWB's and its filled twice a day in the dead of winter..Less when its warm out... Some are backed up by propane if fire goes out (central boiler) You can burn pine..Green wood does smoke esp green pine.. Seasoned wood youll get the most btu's..The new epa furnaces dont smoke like the older ones..What ive heard you cant burn green wood in them and the wood is a lot smaller. There is a option of pellet and corn burning OWB which are pretty much smokeless..My furnace is 90 feet from my house..Some OWB claim up to 500 ft...Either way being a old house its gonna take a lot to keep warm..Wood is always cheaper!...Free wood free heat..Beats paying for that bill for foreign oil

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Spray Insulation
« on: September 15, 2010, 07:17:42 PM »
Seems like a good idea..I know spray insulation is not cheap..My only question is how long will it last in the ground before it starts breaking down and or the R value goes down..Id say they only way it takes on water if a area is missed or you have a pin hole somewhere or when it starts to break down over time..

Whats way to much wood..I burn about 9 cord.. Hydronic wise less water is more efficient. My bro-in law bought the new pellet owb from Central..Only holds 90 gallons of water

My stack is 20 feet up..Year before last I used reg stove pipe..What I found is that the pipe burns out at the bottom and over all the pipe is junk after a season..I bought Supervent at Lowes..I know its expensive..But for me it beats buying stove pipe every yr..Reg stove pipe isnt cheap either.. But reg stove pipe works for a bit

I own a aqua-therm 275..This winter will be my 4th yr heating 1800sq ft house..Theres no need for external holding tanks.. etc  Less water is  heated quicker..Your oil furnace in your basement dont hold hundreds of gallons of water. As far as overheating my buddy has the exact same furnace..He runs his all year long..Never a problem of overheating in summer months...Only time the unit will overheat is if the door isnt shut all the way or the fan flapper isnt seated right..Other than that you can fill it all the way and dont have to touch it for a couple of days...Depends what type of wood is being burned too..
