Plumbing / underground piping
« on: September 11, 2010, 05:59:02 PM »
i am considering replacing my underground pipe as the insulation value is deteriorating badly. When i installed this 11 years ago the rage was 1 inch kitec wrapped in 3 layers of bubble rap and run down a 4 inch plastic sewer pipe. In the time it has been underground i believe it has cracked (at least in one spot) and let water into the pipe so now i am heating the earthi as well as the house. i used 1/3 more wood last year that in previous years. I was thinking i could live with that as wood is plevtiful...but i have since thought that just because my wood supply is good, that is no reason to waste it. i want to make it right in case i am not here in the years to come.

I guess my question is what pipe is the best. I like the logstor brand but i also read that for every hundred feet that pex lines can "grow" an inch. does this type of insulation around the pex allow for this? or will it eventually crack? Or should it be run down another tile so it has room to move a little inside it?

I would really like this to be the last time for this underground piping stuff. lol

Any one have thoughts or ideas??

todays scrap prices in my area are as follows

300 series stainless is 80 cents a pound

400 series stainless is 07 cents a pound (thats right 7 cents)

plain old mild steel is 10 cents a pound

your expensive 400 SS fire box that rotted out is not worth as much as mild steel and they charged how much more for it?

sorry couldn't resist a little poke.

it must be the spring air...enjoy it

it was just enough warmth to almost get me to shut the silver bullet down for the year..2 days in a row with 24 hour burns...then today started out nice..40 and sunny at 7 am the downhill from there..rain...wind..blah!  I filled the stove at 6 pm and cranked the floor heat...nice now

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / my manifold
« on: February 06, 2010, 04:52:13 PM »
in this photo you can see that my one pump is delevering water to the "feed" manifold and it is running through 3/4 inch  lines  to my exchanger in my frunace..and to my domestic hot water exchanger  then i h ave 1/2 lines going  to a rad in my fire place over 50 feet away and 1/2 inch lines to my radiant floor heat...by doing this i can at any time take any one or more 'appiances" off line to work on them if needed. the pump is a taco 11 and it so far has has no problem delivering water to any one of my 'appliances"

i am sure there are a lot of different ways to plumb your OWB but this one works good for me

thought i would post just for info or ideas of a new person getting started

Equipment / chain saw sharpener
« on: January 29, 2010, 08:10:55 PM »
got tired of paying to get chains "trued"..after so many filings i lose that perfect cut and after paying (in our area) upwards of 12 bucks to sharpen a chain, i bout the TSC special for 149...works quite well actually, took me an old chain or two to get all the settings just right but i have had good sharp chains for the past 2 weeks. i may never file again..lol

a good file in teh field is handy...but a bucket of sharp chains is nice if you happen to hit the ground or something in the wood that damages the chain"beyond the file"

5 below american in the wind tonight..wood will last maybe not 12 hours in this wind
we have had a blast for the last week...nearing 24 inches of snow for the last ten days and it has been quite cold
snomobiles are loving it!
if i ever get back to the bush i won't have to worry about hitting the ground with my saw..but walking will be tougher!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / wood usage
« on: May 31, 2009, 02:19:33 PM »
now that spring is here and i have had a little time to meet with other OWB owners in the area, everyone agrees, in this part of southern ontario winter was harder than in the past and everyones wood consumption was up about 2 bush cords regaurdless of stove manufacturer

some who normally say they burn 6 cords say they were near 8 and  some who were normally 10 were 12
my feeling...who cares! if iwee burning oil or gas i would still have burnt more

if i normally burn 10 and i burnt 12 that would be a 20% increase....do you know anyone whom would think a 20% increase in their gas bill would not be bitchin'
i say..if i have to cut 2 more loads of wood..that aint so bad, sure it is more time and labor on my part but i am saving more

some folks tell me if i was to count all my labor at an hourly wage it would work our to the same as paying for my home heating fuel so i am not really saving anything...i call Bull Sh....t.  All those guys whom tell me that are lazing on the couch and nursing hangoevers or still in bed most saturday mornings while me and my sons are in the bush

i know cutting would isnt for everyone, and paying the gas bill is easier, but for me it one of the places my kids learned that work is good for you and can produce results. And you can get to know your kids a whole lot better than in front of the tv with them

if you cut wood with your family like I do, take a lunch with you or some food to reheat or cook over a wood fire, make an outing of it, cutting wood can be an enjoyable day out and a great family time together. My daughter has even brought the grandkids out for a hike and a campfire dinner while we are there, they love it.

OK, that is my spring time rant...sometimes money people tick me off when they tell me i am wasting my time with this OWB...forgive my ranting and enjoy the summer, sharpen your chains and axe September is just three months away

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / COLD WEEK AHEAD
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:50:23 AM »
Was going to shut down for the summer but a week of flurries and and near freezing temps are forcast so it looks like another week (at least) of wood burning. Almost looking forward to the spring chores of bedding strawberry plants and planting things...winter was longer than normal it seems or is it just my getting older makes the winters seem longer

Anyway, hope everyone is ready for warmer weather and a nice summer
