maple?
« on: March 11, 2015, 07:28:10 AM »

Just had one of our woods logged they took 200 cords of dead ash) now i have a ton of maple trees.

does anyone burn it? the btu rating is better than ash from what i saw, but it takes awhile to dry?

i have around 2-3 years worth of tops but i am tempting on cutting maple as well to let it dry

Ayuh,....   There's 'bout a million different Maples,....

Hard maple, aka: rock maple, sugar maple is a Great long lastin' firewood,...

Soft maple is Ok firewood,...

Silver maple, Boxelder, 'n the rest, Suck for firewood,....

So,...    It depends on Which maple ya got,....

its red maple i think.. not sure on the maple classification.

all i know is it cuts like a soft wood but the bark looks like a hard wood. either way my nw 572xp chain saw makes quick work of those logs. easier to cut than the ash that's for sure..

If it's red maple (aka swamp maple around here) the bark is pretty smooth, even when diameter gets large.  The wood will be an off white color possibly with a small darker center, it's pretty light weight and splits like butter.  They like water so around here, they grow in wet areas or areas with poor drainage.  I wouldn't call it lousy firewood, but it certainly doesn't compare to oak.  It will burn hot enough but pretty quickly and don't expect it to coal up very well.  These are my experiences with red maple and I live in South Jersey.  Where are you?

If its sugar maple then its great firewood btu higher than red oak but less than white oak and dries way faster than oak!

I burn lots of red maple. I have lots of it and it is so easy to process. Most of mine is small enough to just cut and throw in the boiler. And using rounds with smooth bark makes it easy to slide them wherever I want, I do save the good stuff for the colder weather.

its in the low water areas and i did notice water was seeping out of it after i cut it.

i bet its red maple. it has a dark star shape on the center and is light weight. i have a ton of it around and all the trees are perfect size i can get 4-5 8 foot logs out of each tree. ill burn it in the warmer months.

also i am in west Michigan

Guy down the street has a big syrup operation.
Lines all through the woods,, constantly animals breaking them .....
Looks like alot of work to me.
The Maple round here are not doing that good.
Like I said,, I'm no arborist, but, alot that I cut, are bad, or brown inside.
