Equipment / Re: Wood Splitter Recommendation?
« on: August 26, 2017, 03:32:53 PM »
I got my wood splitter from Menards for 700 bucks.  It is a brute 30 ton vertical/horizontal splitter.  At the time they had a good sale on the splitter 25% off plus another 11% instore credit.  Couldn't pass it up.

Personally I love the splitter from harbor freight that has the 2 way double sided wedge.  Seems to work super, you can find them on YouTube if you want to watch some videos.  There is a company up in Canada that my aunts brother in law owns called split fire, same concept as the harbor freight but much better built and more expensive.  Another that I really like is the rapid fire from DR.  It is a conetic energy splitter and is extremely fast (and dangerous) but that may be getting out of your price range.

Fire Wood / Re: Green wood?
« on: August 26, 2017, 03:27:32 PM »
He is exactly right. I read this somewhere... "think of someone coming in the night and stealing 40% of your wood pile". Basically that is what will happen with wet wood.  The first year I had my stove I burned wood in the mid to upper 30s percentage of moisture and thought the stove worked great but it did smoke a significantly amount more than last year when I burned wood in the mid to upper 20s.  From now on I have been trying my best to keep the wood I burn in the 20s.  Less smoke and longer burn times that's for sure.  I can get 15 hours of burn time when the wood is in the 20s but only 12 in the 30s so that alone speaks for itself.  I have also come to find burning rounds in a conventional OWB works better than splits.

Check out some auction sites, that's where I found my brother his 1000 gallon tank. Cost him 800 dollars to purchase it.

Marty first of all thank you for making this a great place.  Love to come on here and just read and comment without everyone getting all bent out of shape.

I'm not one for  nominating people but I think RSI would make a great mod as well.  Very kind and knowledgeable guy.

Just keep in mind back in the day when that steam powered saw was invented that was the bees knees. He didn't have to break a sweat  lol

I just wanted to comment on the shark bite fittings, or use them the first year I installed my woodstove in my new house, they sealed fine for about three months into the second heating season and started to lick slowly. The O-ring ended up becoming flat and water could Seep past.    I ended up just soldering some copper to pex male fittings on the exchanger.  If you're in a pinch and want to get the stove rolling the shark bites will be fine but they do not last.  If u have some time to do it, do it right and skip them.

Regulations / Re: New Rules for 2020

I thought I read something saying coal was good until 2025 and from then a clean burn act was in process.  This would be for power plants as well.  Called clean coal or something like that. Would need to have an electronic device in the chimney to catch all fine ash particulate plus a reburner filter and catalytic converter

Portage & Main / Re: To gas or not to gas? That is the question.....
« on: August 24, 2017, 12:23:30 AM »
Just to make sure I understand and in compliance.
The bl 34-44 with shaker grate option is legal for residential use in indiana?

Only if you burn coal in it, and to be a compliant coal unit in Indiana it will need to be classified as a coal unit with UL approval because of the shaker grate option, thats my understanding of it at least. The C models from HM are sold as coal units therefore comply with Indiana’s law. Your allowed to use wood to get your coal started, like some have said, if it takes most of the winter to get the coal going……

I wouldn’t be afraid of a gasifier at all, they’ve come a long ways in a short amount of time.

Taking notes ;)

Heatmor / Re: Looking at new Heatmor 200CB
« on: August 24, 2017, 12:21:19 AM »
As far as I know the only difference is the grate shakers and ash grates.   The other question you would have to call the company or ask a dealer.   They burn wood just the same as they would in the past.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Are you ready?
« on: August 24, 2017, 12:18:58 AM »
Well, I was spreading 2016 campaign promises the other day (steer and bull poo) and seen a hornets nest a long ways up an electrical tower.

My grandfather is a bee keeper and he swears by this.  The higher up it is the colder it will be.  Who knows but all the snow we were supposed to get this last winter ended up being rain this last spring.    With the rainfall accumulation we got during the spring and early summer we would've gotten over 10 feet of snow.  Either way I'm ready!  Did I mention the geese are already flocking up and flying in V formation.

Propane is my back up source of heat so it depends largely on propane prices. Over the 16 years I've ran an owb I'd guess the savings around $1500-$2000 a year. Less so on years like now when propane is cheap, but you get it back when prices rise.

Now, if you factor in the nice tractor I bought, the wood splitter, dump trailer, and the 440 Stihl, well..........
Might not have saved any money but its paid for some pretty cool toys in the process.  :)

Lol what you just said reminded me exactly of what I have going on!  I probably didn't save anything at all but went totally backwards and upside down.  Got me a bigger truck, dump trailer, new tractor and a few new saws. 75,000 dollars later I'm saving a few bucks on my heating bill over the winter ;)

General Discussion / Re: First Gas Cans, Now This
« on: August 24, 2017, 12:02:56 AM »
Yes they are.  I've been more than happy just to have the pop cap and vent on the their end.  Simple and effective.  I even like the easy pour for my small engines with the button on the end to start and stop fuel flow.  Everything else really sucks imo.  For my small tractors that hold more than 5 gallons I have resorted to the "race fuel" gas cans.

Hawken Energy, support only / Re: Now That Hawken's Gone......

I would tend to agree... jumping back and forth on regs is a real pain for everybody. New technology is a good thing as long as it comes with enough time to adjust.
Id never want to go back to my old MF5000. Reliable but my GS100 has way less smoke and really isn't much more complex. Probably less total time spent cleaning.

Don’t get me wrong here, I love my G series, I burn less wood while heating more space than my old conventional could. But instead of mandating something and driving how many companies out of business now, how about a cash for smokers program instead much like cash for clunkers? I mean if I was really cynical I’d say driving companies out of business was the desired result, a lot easier to control people when they are relying on unemployment and food stamps to survive.

If I was really really cynical I’d say they’d hope to just plain ban wood burners altogether as its impossible to tax the firewood somebody cuts on their own property, not to mention somebody who is independent enough to supply their own heat is a lot harder to get hooked on the government tit.

If it was really about clean air, then why not ban imports altogether from countries who don’t meet the same clean air standards North American manufacturers are forced to meet? Eventually all the crap that is spewed into the air in China or India will find it’s way here eventually anyways.

Glad someone understands what this is really about.  I call it socialism, full control.  When they have that they can shut us down at anytime.
