Does anyone know if the epa rules are applied to outbuildings? Curious if one is still allowed if its not used to heat the primary residence?  Say for example you just wanted to heat an outbuilding such as a detached garage or barn.

General Discussion / Another reason to burn wood
« on: January 30, 2019, 04:01:42 PM »
After nearly 20 years of feeding an OWB, I said, if they ever run natural gas past my house, I'd ditch the OWB and switch over. Well, with the recent cold weather here, seems like there isn't enough gas to go around. With temps in the -30 range, the utilities here are asking people to turn down thermostats to reduce demand. Over 150 homes in the area have no gas at all, and may not until sometime tomorrow. Lows tonight are again in the -30's.

Maybe cutting wood isn't so bad after all.

General Discussion / Damn cold
« on: January 29, 2019, 05:15:07 PM »
Got some damn cold weather here the next few days.   -31 tonight with windchills of -55. Tomorrow has a high of -18. Wednesday night is a low of -34 with windchill of -62.  The temps really aren't that out of line with a Minnesota winter, but this time the winds are really howling. -30 with 20-30 mph winds can really pull the heat out of a building.

Sure like the hardwoods for these temps though. Stove is ripping along on a steady diet of 2 year seasoned oak

Equipment / Electric chain sharpener
« on: November 27, 2015, 05:50:02 PM »
Been looking at getting an electric chain sharpener and wondering if anyone can recommend a good one. Northern Tool has several for sale and they range from $100 for a generic model, to anywhere from $200-$500 for an Oregon.
Anything in particular i shold be looking for?  Any recommendations?

Central Boiler / Eclassic users- Smoke bypass door question
« on: August 29, 2015, 07:15:25 PM »
Just curious how well this feature works at keeping the smoke out of way when reloading the furnace.
With a couple sections of chimney pipe does it draw most of it out the flue or does a lot still spill out the door?

In my search for a replacement to my 5648, I've noticed most manufacturers now require a thermostatic bypass to be installed. The way I understand this is it will close at 150 degrees and recirculate the water back to the boiler. If this is the case,  it seems I will loose the freeze up protection I now have when my propane furnace comes on.

Am I understanding this correctly? If so, any other options other than antifreeze for freeze up protection?

Hi Everyone,
New member here but a long time OWB user. This fall will start my 13th year with my Classic 5648 and Ive been considering updating to a gasifier.
One question I have, however, is how do these stoves perform with 24 hour burn times?
From what Ive read, airflow and a good coal bed are key to good performance, and most seem to go with a 12 hour burn to achieve this.
I leave for work at 4:30 AM and would prefer to just load at night and not have to mess with it until I get home in the afternoon.  Am I asking for trouble?

Anyone run these gasifiers on longer burn times with good results?
