Portage & Main / Re: bl 28-40 front air chamber plugging
« on: February 03, 2017, 06:46:17 AM »
I have trouble keeping the front air chamber clean. Does anyone have any tricks? I'm getting a hot fire and keeping the creosote down everywhere but there. I'm not sure if it is related or not but I have the re-bar spacers in the bricks. I sure wish I had the new style bricks, but I tried to get P&M to give me those at a reasonable price when my stove was new, but Rory won't work with me.

Joks79, I switched over to the newer style of bricks midway through last season. I think I get more smoke when loading my stove than with the original ones, not sure why.

I also used to get more creosote in the front air loop then but I also found I had moisture in the front of the ash tray area against the door. I wrapped pink insulation around the ash door extension and built a wood box to place against the ash door area, it stays dry in there now.

I could be the bricks, the insulating of the door or combination of them both that helped to keep the air passage from plugging. If you don't have something around the ash door now, maybe try that first - its much cheaper than new bricks.

I got a call from Heat More in December wondering if I was getting moisture in my ash pan.  I was not, but they had made up a baffle to help fix the issue for those who are. All I had to do was pay shipping to get it. It's a U shaped piece of sheet metal with fiberglass insulation stuffed in it and it sits just inside the ash door.  I was not having a moisture issue before but am using it anyway.

Motor is a Century model SFHP blower  stock number 383.  Zoro has there replacement the 383 for $110.00  https://www.zoro.com/century-electric-draft-inducer-blower-383/i/G0783295/  It seems to be working fine, just the new noise making me a little concerned.

On my second season now with my 28-40 and last night when putting wood in I notices the blower fan making noise it had not made before. Makes me wonder if I should round up a replacement sooner rather than later.  Where is a good place to find that spare motor?

Is it expected to have a few leaky connections after shutting down the boiler for summer?  I did not need to add any water all winter and  after cooling down a couple of the shark bites are leaking.  Crimped ones seem fine.

I got my 28-40 from Strawbale Dave and fired it for the first time November 16 last year.  It is plumbed as Strawbale says ( did it all myself ) and for the first time last week I added almost 2 gallons of water to bring it back up to near full. So in 5 months time that is all the water I added.  For the first couple months I burned more wood that I would have had to because I was over filling it.  After I figured that out my wood consumption has dropped. This is my first boiler so I have little to compare it to except my neighbors both have Central boilers and seem to burn more wood + more smoke. Can't prove it but it seems like it. My only complaint is now I cut wood not for fun but because I need to and so far I am still OK with that. I got mine after much shopping based on how it is designed and built and have no regrets.

Stopforumspam.com is what we use to check IP’s

If you use that service how did you get over 280 pages of people waiting for approval?  I have looked into stopforumspam but still choose to take care of approvals myself.  I get about 10 a week so it is a small number, it seems about half are spammers trying to get in.

Good luck

I think that instead of state-by-state subsidy programs that taxes individuals only to give back to other individuals a better overall solution would be for everyone to push for a carbon tax. I know tax Is a dirty word to some folks, but this would be a tax on corporate polluters only not on individuals. The way it works is fossil fuel companies that produce coal, oil and natural gas would be taxed at the mine or well according to the amount of carbon dioxide that will be released into the atmosphere upon consumption of these products. But the best part is that 100% of this corporate pollution tax would be returned to taxpayers. No gimmicks, no subsidies just a check once a year for the same amount to every taxpayer in the country whether you are Bill Gates or Jane or Joe average. This would accomplish some very good things. Number one, it will raise the price of fossil fuel and put it on a more equal footing to renewables, including biomass. Consumers could use their pollution tax check to defray the higher cost of fossil fuel or more intelligently to invest in the biomass for heating and hot water, and solar or wind for electricity. This would stimulate manufacturing and create good jobs in the US and Canada. Eventually that pollution check becomes clear profit and disposable income to help stimulate other parts of the economy. Don't forget to spend that extra money locally! :)

Wondering if that would work like the social security lock box?

I had to wait about4 weeks to be approved and I use outlook.  I have a sight called "Kawasakitrax", we are collecting, fixing and riding Kawasaki snowmobiles.  When I do the approving of new members I copy and paste the IP address into the google search bar.  If that IP is being used for spam it will show in the search result.  If they only have a couple spambots I just delete it.  If they have many I ban that IP address.  So far it has worked well at keeping the bad guys out.  When I signed up here I expected my first post to be something else.
