Title: Get to know me!
Post by: Sluggo on February 18, 2015, 05:00:04 PM
I'm getting sick of reading everyone's comments and not really having any idea who I'm talking to.  Have the smart pin this one to the top for quick reference and let's get to know each other a little better.  I have pictures in my head of what a lot of you are like but I really have nothing to base it off.  For instance I picture slim as skinny, mustache, ratty jeans, smoker, prescription glasses that auto darken when he goes outside, middle 50's,not much into sports, into politics, not a big drinker but maybe a cheap beer if anything!  Let's hear from ya!  I didn't mean to offend you either slim, that's just what I picture when I read your posts!  I will get it started.  I'm 33 years old, just got married in September, have my first kid due this september.  I'm a concrete guy of 13 years.  Residential, commercial, agriculture, walls, flat work, stamped, decorative we do it all.  Feel free to ask questions if you want.  Everyone seems to have questions about concrete.  I live in the country in a log home I built 5 years ago with no female influence and now that I'm married with a kid on the way was that ever a dumb idea!  I'm from a town of roughly 150 people in west central Wisconsin.  I'm about 20 minutes from la crosse and the Mississippi river.  I built a new shed last winter/spring for toy storage and tinkering (heated of course!). I'm into camping, grilling on my Green Egg,occasional drinker,Busch light and captain Morgan, cutting wood,Wisconsin badgers,Green Bay packers, and I quit smoking two weeks ago with Chantix.  I View myself as a libertarian for the most part.  Let's see what we all have in common rather than heating independence.  Can't wait to hear from ya.  Almost forgot,I got a 10 year old lab and 4 year old cocker spaniel who love going to the stove with me.  Also have two semi tame angora cats that sleep 4 feet away from my wood stove door.  It's only a matter of time till an ember lands on one and good night!

I'm 53 years old, never married, no children (I think  ;)), love a shot of Jim Beam whiskey once in a while, wear bi-focal glasses, auto darkening, beard & mustache, physically fit although the back is acting up due to working nearly 20 years in the EMS system, raised in the house I'm in now, lived alone for the past 9 years (took care of dad in his late stages of life before he died 9 years ago) until about 5 months ago one of younger bro's moved in to ease his financial burden as well as mine, I was raised in a town of about 5,000 people, on the border of VT near the Dartmouth College area, I work at Dartmouth College at their Engineering School (you can ask engineering questions but I will not know the answer), quit smoking cold turkey over 20 years ago (a 2.5 pack/day habit).  My political views are center to right, more right leaning, not a fanatic though.

I'm 39 yo, married father of 3 boys (9,7 & 5).  5'9" 160 lbs with short hair and bushy beard.  Live in N Central MN but grew up in Minneapolis.  Always wanted to have some elbow room and 3 years ago bought an old farm in wife's hometown of 2,000 people.  Absolutely, love not having neighbors and spend as much time as I can outdoors.   My day job is selling Electrical Wire and Cable which I have done for the last 18 years..  I spend my spare time feeding farm animals (this helps feed my 3 growing boys), gardening,  cutting fire wood, recently took up bow hunting and the list goes on and on...  oh, and I have a big German Shepherd named Ozmon and he keeps an eye on things...

Realitivley new to "country living", the Mrs. of almost 19 years found us a place a few years back that sits on 10 acres so we jumped without even being in the market for a new place.  Now I cannot imagine living with sidewalks or even on a paved road.  Been in law enforcement for almost 16 years, after 6 years in the Navy and a few years of construction work.  6'4 320#, high and tight cut, go figure...  I love being outdoors, hunting with my 13 year old son and 15 year old daughter. We camp and love our great lakes, have two hairball machines (cats) and one Entlebucher Mountian Dog, small cousin to the Bernese. I love to problem solve everything from mechanical, electrical, electronics or just try to build anything vs. buying.  My views are right of center but not so far as to be headed back left.

I'm 26, probably considered young to some you guys on here but I grew up fast.  I graduated high school at 17 and celebrated my 18th birthday in Marine Corps boot camp.  Spent the next 5 years in the Marines with a couple deployments to some warmer areas.  I got out and took a job working in a test lab for a small engines manufacturer.  I am working on finishing up my Mechanical Engineering degree.  As much I hate seeing how much comes out of my checks for taxes I have to remember that it isn't all going to welfare and "Obama Mamas".  I would have never considered college if it wasn't for the GI bill.  So thank you guys!  3 years ago I bought a foreclosed house about an hour south of Green Bay Wi and have been working on fully remodeling it.  I just have the rec room/ bar area left to finish in the basement.  Hope to sell this house in the next few years and build on the 27 acres of woods I purchased over the summer.  I enjoy bow hunting, snowmobiling, working on the house, anything with engines, and like everyone else cutting firewood and clearing the sawdust out of my throat with some cold beer.

Thank you for your service JTS.

Just spent the last 8 hours at our local VFW helping the Mens Auxiliary out with our yearly Daytona party, not the only fund raising event for the Auxiliary but pretty much the major one.

If the snow keeps up, in the morning I'll head to the Legion and see if our lot needs plowed.

Don't mention it, like Sluggo I have nothing but great memories and great friends from my time and wouldn't change anything if I had the chance.

Mlappin, thanks for spending your time with those guys.  I really should get involved with the VFW but don't have much time with work, school, and house projects.  The VFW by me has a fish fry every friday that is open to the public so that is my first choice of places to go if we go out to eat.  I would much rather spend my money there than at chain restaurants.

If any of you are ever in the area my door is always open and I would enjoy sharing a (or a few) beer(s) and some stories.

Even if you could only make one or two meetings a year, by joining you increase their membership by one which makes what they have to say in Washington more likely to be heard.

Our Legion in town has breakfast seven days a week and lunch Monday thru Friday, all open to the public, if I get down their at the right time for breakfast Abe is usually there, WWII veteran and he's one sharp cookie yet. Our township is building a new Emergency Services building across the road from the Legion, Abe will tell you where the water tower, round house, coaling tower and half a dozen other things used to be at the building site when the Wabash railroad and steam locomotives were still big in the area.

I enjoy sites like this because besides all the knowledge you gain, you won't find a better group of honest, hard working salt of the earth type of people anywhere else.

As for me: 47 years old, self employed electrical contractor, wife of 20 years and 2 teenage daughters who mean everything to me. I'm 5'10, 208 lbs. and now cut my own hair since it just doesn't make sense to go to the barber since there's hardly anything left. I enjoy working out, cutting wood(usually), working on my house, being outside on our land, spending time with my family and also spending time at our place on the NH seacoast. I actually enjoy my job as well.

Great idea to start this topic!

Ok, here it goes!  I'm 27, 6' 220 lbs. either have a shaved head or high and tight but I switch back and forth.  Married with two children.  8 year old daughter and a son that was just born on Januart 15th.  I've been in the Illinois National Guard for a little over 8 years and that's where I work fulltime.  I won't even begin to tell you what I do because it's confusing.  However, what I'm trainined in is POL (Petroleum Oils and Lubricants) Basically we are resposible for anything that has to do with fuel.  Whether it be ground or aviation fuels.  We drive around in big green trucks and put gas in anything that takes it.  Only been on two deployments, Kyrgyzstan and Kuwait.

I actually just became a dealer for HeatMaster within the last month.  Things are slow right now but I hope to get my name out there and bring HeatMaster furnaces to the Central Illinois area.  I have a lot to learn, but you gotta start somewhere!

I don't have a lot of hobbies really, I like guns and Harley Davidson Motorcycles.  I have a 06 Street Glide that my brother and I painted a couple years back.  I don't claim any particular political party but I have mostly Libertarian views other than a few things.   Really I feel like everyone just needs to stop getting in everyone elses business.  You do your thing and I'll do mine.  I think that's pretty much it, I'm pretty boring!

Constable - Nice to have another biker among us.  I ride as mush as I can.  Now that weather is showing signs of spring I'll be servicing my bike soon to get her ready before it gets too late and can't ride with nice weather.  Be safe on that thing and be prepared for the unexpected.  Roger

I used to ride a street bike, had several close calls but no accidents, entirely the idiot in the other vehicle not paying attention. In 2013 the wife and I had a little extra money and was thinking about a new Harley, something like a Deluxe as I'm more into the cruisers and never plan on riding it more than an hour from home, the though of riding to Florida or Sturgis South Dakota like my Uncle has doesn't turn me on at all. Driving in a nice car from Indiana to either place also doesn't turn me on.

With every idiot on the road using their cell phone at all times, the thought of sharing the road with them on a bike quickly turned the extra bit of money into a Polaris Ranger Diesel for the farm instead, figure I'm getting much more use out of the Ranger anyways. That and I'm pretty sure if somebody took us out while on a bike and injured my wife because they were playing with their phone instead of paying attention what I would then proceed to do to them would result in jail time for me, so a Ranger made much more sense.

I've always respected the police, at least in our area. I'm a member of the American Legion and the VFW and it's not that surprising how many ex military join law enforcement when mustering out.

Guys, I'm not saying I don't respect the Police but there are some on the force who don't use common sense, there used to be a time when almost all police vehicles had a sign on the car that read
( To serve and Protect ) I have a friend whose wife was having an MS attack so badly that she was vomiting into a salad bowl while he drove her to the Emergency room of the local hospital 5 miles away, 1/2 mile from the hospital, a local police officer who retired from the State Police stopped him for not wearing his seat belt, this cost my friend a ticket and a delay of 15 minutes, that to me is just plain stupid.
Another time my son at 17 years old broke up with his girlfriend, her brother, a 22 year old thug who thought he was tough drove into my yard threatening to beat up my boy, I had just come out of the shower, still in my boxer shorts and went directly outside to see what the fuss was, I told him that he could go ahead with his plans but would need to take me on first, he drove away and 20 minutes later I had a State Trooper in my yard explaining to me that I should have stayed in the house and called 911. Sorry guys, my property, my son, I'll call 911 right after I protect them both! The point is that some nit wits do get the job and it then goes to their heads.
Then there is the courts to deal with, another buddy of mine was fixing up a two family rental that he bought cheap over the course of 3 years, he was almost done when a local crackhead broke in and cut all the copper out of the basement and even took the brass valve that shuts off the city water line, approximately $14000 in copper, they caught the guy later, he got a $300 fine, the very next guy in the courtroom was a huge black man from down south who had been bagged by a local Police officer for a log book violation in his tractor trailer, his fine was $750.  True stories folks, wonder why I lose faith in the system?

Seriously constable, are you that thin skinned, I never said all law enforcement are the same in fact I meant what I said about being happy that you are on the job, I personally have had some pretty bad experiences with law enforcement, I drove an over the road truck most of my adult life, we as an industry have been profiled by the public for many years simply because of a few bad apples, most of us would step up to the plate to correct a bad apple, the first step is to admit that they are out there, second step is to do what you personally can to fix the problem, I sincerely wish you the best and ask you to stay safe, in today's age with all the anti Police attitude out there you will need to stay sharp, Please do!

Pretty much how I got into it, was impressed enough with Heatmaster and the good folks that work there I wanted to sell em as well, if I don’t sell one to somebody I’ll still offer my two cents worth if asked and hopefully they can avoid the mistakes I made on my first install.

Was fifteen years ago and the local Woodmaster dealer gave me advice to the best of his knowledge, back then the best I could do was dial up so spending hours researching on the web was more than a little aggravating waiting for pages to load. Every thing works, just not as well as it should. I need to redo the sidearm as it’s mounted a little too high and doesn’t have cross flow on the boiler side. Also need to reverse the hookups on the water to air heat exchanger. Actually just going to start over with one inch copper and do it right and do it once.

Do I blame Woodmaster dealers for bad advice, nope. He gave me the best advice he could given his knowledge at the time.

35 Self employed residential building contractor. Getting married to long time sweetheart in Sept. Avid outdoorsman , hunting ,fishing ,cutting wood ,working around our 5 acre farm. Plenty to do with a fairly original 1840 2500 sf farm house and keeping the property up to the honey's expectations. We pretty much build most of the things we need like buildings ,log splitter ,wood wagon with davit and winch , and must like fixing things with the fleet of old tractors we have. I do most of my own plumbing ,electrical ,welding\fabbing ,and repurposing of almost anything. I have a 10 year old yellow lab who's my best friend. And after a long days work I love a cold Bud or two... oh yeah and if we don't have enough to do with our time buddy of mine bought 30 acres and we are starting a christmas tree farm. Maybe should have my head looked at

I am seventy three  years old, but don't feel it. I have cut wood all my life and still cut wood.  I always tried to figure out a way not to burn propane. Started with a Buck stove in my fireplace. Moved up to a used Woodmaster that lasted fourteen years. It didn't quite I wanted to change it out for a Portage and Maine BL 2840.  Woodmaster was way over sized. Sold it to a guy that heats two houses. My wife and I live on seventy acres that has been in my family for one hundred and forty-five years. A while back I had the privilege of meeting Slim when we were on Vacation.

One of our guys from the VFW bought  place in Belize (British Honduras), guess he didn’t want to hang in Florida with the other old farts that bought winter places there.

He really likes scuba diving…

We have an open invitation to fly down anytime we want, neither the wife or I are much into tropical climates.

Marty, I know it's not for everybody- my dad HATES tropical anything. I was to Belize in 2015 and found it to be cool as sh!t, as I am a diver as well. Not much to see in the local mud water so I try to hit somewhere cool every winter and see what's under the surface. My favorite thing about DR is it's CHEAP! Spent a month there in 2014 after my neck ordeal and only spent like $1700 total, including air. If ever you get the travel bug I suggest getting down there!

Thanks Yoder!

And Jon, yes it's me. Thank you

Hi, I'm the man known as the Bluegrass Woodburner. I'm 56 years old, 5-9 220 lbs. been married to my wife for 38 wonderful years. We live in the mammoth cave area of Ky. We have 3 grown children and 5 grandsons. I work for a company in Deteoit Michigan and travel 3 states every week on my job. Home every night. We live in an old elementary school house. Heating 5400 square feet. I'm a baptist preacher and have pastured 6 different churches the last 20 years and am now pastor of a church about 5 miles from where I live. I enjoy working with firewood and am a raiser of fancy poultry for exhibition. Only owned a boiler for about 3 years now and am very glad to have installed one. The folks who we bought this schoolhouse from had 600.00-800.00 heating bills in cold weather. Our electric bills run around 100.00 -140.00. Enjoy all your discussions.

Meh, I get enough heat and humidity during the summer. Wife is a congenital heart patient, too much of either heat or humidity does her in very quickly. However European winters agree with the both of us. Last trip there to visit her family we jumped in her cousins car, drove to Dover, seen the white horsey on the cliff then got on the chunnel and ended up in Calais, drove from there to Normandy. Was 62 degrees in France the third week of December. Next time to England I’ve been talking to the cousins and thinking of spending a week in Normandy, for next to nothing you can camp, AKA army tent like M*A*S*H but with real beds. Dunkirk isn’t that far from Calais either, just the opposite direction of Normandy.

Doesn’t cost us hardly anything once we are there though, airfare kinda sucks, first time there we flew AA in cattle class, then got delayed after boarding the plane. Big beefy farm kids ain’t meant to sit in cattle class for three hours before it even gets in the air. We now fly British Airways exclusively, they have four classes on international flights, one class is between cattle and business, seats are 6 inches wider with 8 inches more leg room and they recline a LOT further than cattle. Get an extra bag per person, better meals and higher dollar free hooch. Best part is half the time we’ve flown with BA have been upgraded to business where the real good hooch is. Stay with her aunt and she won’t let us pay for anything, usually stay at least three weeks and get farmed off to various cousins for the day and usually includes dinner with em, they won’t let us pay for anything either. However after the first visit none of her family are willing to pay for my drinks anymore, weird huh? It’s not like I single handedly try to make sure all the local pubs and breweries are operating in the black while I’m there or anything although I have a fondness for Carlisle or Kings IPA. And as much as I hate stereotypes, don’t ever match drink for drink with an Irish truck driver, you’re head will hurt for many days afterwards. New Years at the Conservative Club (think like our VFW or Legion) and I’d buy a round of pints, he’d bring back a round of Jack and Coke, I’d buy a round of pints, he’d get a round of Beam and Coke, and so on from 7pm till 4am. I did the USA proud though and hung with em all night, so remember that guys if you see my gofundme page for a new liver.

Her aunt lives on the coast in Felixstowe, doesn’t take long to get from there back to Heathrow even using public transport and once at Heathrow or Luton the rest of europe is a short flight away, took less than an hour on a easyjet to get to Inverness, from there a short car ride to a lodge on Loch Ness, 3 days and 2 nights there. Theres a reason some of the more famous military men are scotsman or of scottish decent, that land is rugged like nothing I’ve ever seen, the sissies die young before getting a chance to reproduce.

Have a strange desire next time there to hop on a jet and head to Poland to see Auschwitz, back in the day when dirt was new it so happened my middle school guidance counselor was a descendant of a Auschwitz jew.

Kings IPA is meant to be drank at room temperature and unlike a warm american beer, it doesn’t taste the least bit like skunk piss.

Posting here enough now I may as well introduce myself... I'm 39, married 12 years, living in NW Vermont near St. Albans.  Originally from the San Joaquin Valley in California where we burned wood first in a fireplace then a couple of insert stoves as I grew up, then moved to Vermont with a brief detour in Connecticut near New Haven.  6', 140, so probably the scrawniest guy here.  The glasses do auto-darken.  Give me a glass of rye or some peated scotch and I'm happy.  Long hair I've managed to avoid burning in the boiler but my eyebrows and way-too-gray-for-my-age beard have not been so lucky.  I spent most of last winter collecting and dumping buckets of water pouring into my basement through bad drain tile underground lines and I just want my heat to work and not need babysitting.

I've burned down one outdoor wood boiler and have had ridiculously bad luck with oil boilers (4 years in this house and I'm on my third one, the cast iron keeps cracking).  It seems to be due to make up water from invisible leaks in the in-slab radiant.  Finally lost the radiant in the last garage due to leaks so I have a Reznor hydronic heater going in down there in a week and a half.

Just about 12 acres here, almost all of it hayed pasture land.  Need to buy up some of the adjacent woods to feed this beast.  Even buying wood, it's still cheaper than multiple heating oil fills through the winter.  Five laying hens, one rooster, one 70 pound mostly-beagle mutt that turned 3 a week ago.  No kids.  One tenant that was more work than all of them until she took off without paying the last month's rent in October, but at least she's not leaving the garage door open just to have a convenient place to smoke and increasing my wood usage any longer.

Quit smoking maybe 4 years ago by switching to vaping.  Day job, I sit around and type on computers and keep databases up and running, working in the snow sports  industry.  My woodshed is falling down, one of these days I'll have to tear apart collapsed roof and walls to get to my firewood, because the guy who built this place might have been a concrete guy but he didn't put in drainage so these concrete slab walls are cracking and collapsing inward.  A nice pile of wood gives it support at the beginning of the season, but we know how those don't last.

Just joined recently; thought I'd pop by and introduce myself. Female, barely 5 foot but don't have to stand on tiptoe to kiss hubby; married 25 years to . . . pretty much Superman. He can do anything, it seems! He's a beer man, but I prefer to mix drinks myself (or not mix them; depending on the mood.)

We started off as dairy farmers, but moved to a cabin up in the hills after the price of milk didn't cover the mortgage, let alone the cost of production. You can take the boy (or girl) off the farm, but you can't take the farm out of them, so we have a couple of beefers that are more my parents' pets than anything that actually turns a profit, and a small flock of chickens (this will be our third since leaving the farm. Learning to predator-proof up here has been problematic!) Border collie that identifies as a lap dog, Yorkie that identifies as a Doberman. The Yorkie is his, not mine. 75 acres of side hill  that's almost all cropland or scrub pasture, except a CCC-era stand of pines that controls erosion on the steeper parts. Most of our wood comes from his cousin (still a dairy-farmer and supplies hubby's 'farming fix') down in the valley, but that'll need to change at some point. Ain't none of us getting younger!

Best part of the outdoor furnace? It burns what other stoves can't and the ashes stay outside. Worst part? Finding a babysitter for it when we want to travel.

"Our fire is a family pet that lives out in the yard during the summer, and the furnace in the winter."

Had 5 kids, now 5 adults that live in all parts of the country except here . . . except at the holidays. Youngest hates the indoor stove (it makes me smell like a ham.) The indoor stove is what we use when it's chilly enough to need heat, not cold enough to run the big stove- or if the power goes out for extended periods of time. Hubby: we could get rid of the little stove; we haven't used it in a couple of years. Me: We could get rid of the fire extinguisher. We've never used that at all. Hubby: (silence)
