Portage & Main / Re: BL 28 40 fire brick spacing
« on: November 26, 2017, 08:49:47 AM »
Here is what I made ,I first tried 10 mm re bar  found it was to thin  used 19 mm spacing worked out just right . Also have no spacing at the back of the heater ,last brick. What I found was I was getting ash in the air injection hole .now with no spacing at the very back I get little to no ash in there . This is my 3 rd season with no isues . The frame shows no signs of bending ,very easy to pull out for cleaning

We live west of Grande Prairie   (huallen) area 25 mins out of the city .  The picture was near fox creek 2 hours east of us on hwy 43 . We got lots of rain 74 mm and wet snow. South and east of us got a pile of snow ,some areas south got over 18 inches !!!  Wet here big time with only 25% of the crops harvested   now the forecast is for plus 20 by mid week , crazy .  We will take it  another wet harvest.  So glad i put up a 50 ft wood shed 3  years .  Wood is nice and dry

When I installed the side arm it would be very hot but after the second person showering it was going cold .I put this valve in at the top run 1/4 open ,problem solved . Also I had to remove the anti drain back valve in the top of the tank below the out let

Fire Wood / Re: Tamarack

It burns well at least the slabs I have burnt but it will also mill out for some nice barn floor and wall boards stands up to the animal piss pretty good.

I was thinking about using for inside lining in the green house I want to build . But I think I will stick to my orginal plan of riping oak 2x4 down to 1 inch thick use that . I have a boat load if oak 2x4 and 4x4 that I have been hauling home from a pipe yard that is just tossing it out for fire wood .  The 2x4 are 9 ft and the 4x4 are 10 ft . I go by this yard too and from work everyday so if there is any out side the fence I load up !! Since freeze up I got over 1700 2x4 and 700 4x4

Out west i'am,  north western Alberta 4 miles off the Alaskan Hi-way west of the city of grande prairie . All I have been burning is the white poplar ,when we built here 4 years ago I had to clear out about 1200 of the poplar to make the yard site . I have little over two more seasons of them left but this tamarack was only 6 miles from home. I think I will try some later in the week ,Temps are supposed to hit -30's by week end .good test I guess

Fire Wood / Tamarack
« on: January 03, 2017, 07:53:17 AM »
The week before Christmas was out for a rip with my side by side ,came across a farmer clearing 1/2 section of land . So I stop and chatted with him about getting some of the larger poplar . He said you can have all you want but there is some tamarack cut and delimbed ,piled in the middle of the second 1/4 . So went in  and had a look . They logged the pine and some spruce 2 years ago but the mill will not take tamarack . He said take it cause he was just going to burn it next year when he burns the poplar piles ... got 14 big loads hauled home  ,just have to repile in the back of the yard today . I cut them into 18 ft lengths some were over 70 ft long . I have never used tamarack but say it is a very  hot ,clean burning wood . Any body ever use it ?

Portage & Main / Re: New BL 28-40 owner, way too many questions...
« on: October 31, 2016, 07:28:49 PM »
I too drawn the water from the bottom and return to the top , 3 years ago when I first hooked it up I found that I was over shooting after a burn so I reverse it to the bottom out , top in and stopped the problem . My pump is inside and I put a fill tap below the check valve at the pump .makes top ups so much easier.  I added a side arm and a small second pump with filter to the hot water heater . I do not have a zone valve on it so the hot water tank is at 180 . we do not have kids at home any more so we watch how far the hot taps are turned on !  Great for washing dishes !,,  going into my 4 th season with the P.M heater with no problems . Dealing with Brian from p m has been great from the sale to all the dumb question I had , he has been very professional 5 star service . I picked mine up right from the factory in Manitoba ,very large facility ,pretty cool to see the heaters being made .

He is a pic of what I did , better to have your return line going back to the boiler on the bottom  less chance of sediment dropping off in the exchanger

Plumbing / Re: sidearm install question
« on: December 01, 2015, 09:21:10 PM »
when i hooked up mine it did the same , what i have found is there is a plastic drain back valve in the out let of the water heater , iremoved it and problem sovled .  what happens is the water flow will come from the bottom of the heater via the side arm . getting that little sucker out of there is kinda a botch to do . i used oring picks ,flat blade screw driver and long noise needle pliers and a choice words . i love this side arm have not had the power turned on to the hot water heater since i lit the stove 1st oct
