Have any luck with shark-bites?
« on: July 25, 2014, 04:51:35 PM »

I will do a few mods in the crawl space and really do not want to drain the bulk of what is going on in that part of the system. I am thinking of doing a quick cut and splice with isolation valves using shark-bites if they are considered reliable and then sweat in the mods. My 40 years of touching plumbing has always been with copper.

Any input is appreciated.

You will be fine with sharkbite, stay away from imitations.

I've done this to change block heaters without draining any coolant, place a vacuum on your system somehow and you'll lose very little no matter what you use. Even one of those siphon wands will work if you have enough air compressor.

If you have a problem with shark bite leaking, it is more than likely that your piping is either not round or has a sharp edge on it that has cut the O-ring when the pipe is inserted, try taking the sharp edge off before you slide the fitting in place and use a sharp pex cutter

Had sharkbites leak on hot water pex if it cooled down. Didn't reseal when heated back up. Shrinkage, you know...crimped on connections worked fine.
