Very true, natural gas is a whole new ballgame!

A cull log, like someone said is not desirable for a mill. All that means is that it's a little crooked, dead,or maybe has a hollow spot.  You guys are awful tough on a guy that buys wood.  Even if it's a wash between oil and buying wood,at least the guys money is staying local.  I don't see farmers coming on here asking why you buy your food.  It's no different, not everyone is lucky enough to have our own woods, skidsteers, attachments, four wheelers, dump trucks, chainsaws, trailers, trucks and whatever else.  Hell,I have a cousin who can't even run a chainsaw and he burns wood!  It's not up to us whether someone's choice to heat their family with wood is right or not.  Give them a few years and who knows, maybe they will be the ones answering our questions!  Keep on trying guys

I personally don't buy wood but I know a lot of people that do.  12 cord of culls for $1000.  That heats a home that with lp would cost $2500.  What's not to understand?

I might make enemies here but I know the silent majority are with me.  I will burn whatever the hell I want, whenever the hell I want.

Are you saying if you want to burn a tire or railroad ties you will?
Yes,I'm saying that if I "WANT" to I will.  Do I want to?  No,but if I did want to I would.  I think we have already established that the EPA ban has nothing at all to do with what people are burning in their stoves.

I would find a better agent if I were you.  My house, with land and outbuildings was assessed at 525,000.  If my house burns or flies away they will pay me not only assessed value but +10% due to having everything insured with them.  They will also pay 90,000 for personal belongings in the house and another $85,000 for vehicles in the garage.  Room and board and vehicles while shopping for new vehicles and while rebuilding house.  Best part is that my wood stove is 15' from my house and the woodshed its in is 6' away from my house.  I would have to say that if my house were to burn it would be thanks to my woodshed starting on fire but they are fine with it.  They even cover loss of firewood I have stored in the woodshed.  $1200/year for my coverage not including vehicles.  Never hurts to shop around.

Definitely go 2x6 walls and 16"+ in the attic or you may as well save your money and not do it at all.  2" high density Dow board under the concrete and the infloor in the new concrete will be enough to heat the space.  Maybe run an extra couple of runs and you will be fine.

How warm is your basement?  What did you insulate your floor joists with?  If your basement is as warm as your main level I would get rid of the insulation in the floor joists and let the heat rise.  In Wisconsin we don't insulate the floor joists.  We might staple up the silver bubble wrap stuff to reflect the in joist heat up but I would try it if your basement ceiling isn't finished off.
