Plumbing / need help sizing pump
« on: November 10, 2011, 05:03:19 PM »
I am trying to finally hook up the floor heat in my shop.
I got a quote from Radiantec ,as they are the ones who gave me my floor layout back in 04'
All I got from them was a "medium/high head" cast Iron pump
I am trying to find out which pump I need.I plan to go with a Grundfos pump as that is what is on the boiler ,and I have had great luck with them.Others I know running Tacos have not had such good luck.
My shop has 8 loops of 1/2" pex that are 250' long.
All just one zone so there is nothing complicated to it.
I can't figure out all this math trying to find out what the head pressures and stuff is.I got too much on my mind and just can't get it straight. So I thought I would ask if anyone here could help. ;)

Equipment / New chain grinder
« on: November 01, 2011, 06:45:38 PM »

Ok here is a few pics of the Speed Star chain grinder from Baileys I got.Very nice quality unit. There are lots of adjustments so you can set it up for all the different required angles for each cutter.I also like how the chain vise clamps move to the center at the same time. That way your chain is centered for even grinding.

My son and I Lit off my homemade gasifier tonight at 6:10pm with water at 57*
We just got done running a cut down flue pipe brush through my stoves heat exchanger pipes, and then blew it all out with the leaf blower >:D
They are calling for a high in the 50's for the rest of the week and lows into the thirtys. Then rain for the next day or so.So I figured I might as well fire her up so we have some heat and to get rid of any dampness.
My son scraped all the rear access covers cleaned and then we put high temp rtv on them and buttoned it up.I let him use the propane torch and get her fire started
I reckon I shall go out in a while and see how she doing.Oh and the ups man brought me a box full of goodys I will have to share.
catch ya all later

Equipment / chain holder
« on: October 04, 2011, 06:31:38 PM »
Well I had some down time at work,so I made me a chain holder out of some Lexan out of the scrap bin.Now after I got them made I wish I had made them different.Oh well, they do work great to keep the spare chains from wadding up in a knot plus getting knicked up.There is a bottom that holds one chain then there is a lift out shelf that holds the second chain.then a lid that is held on with two wing nuts.I made 2 of these and they sure are nice.
Then there is in the background my bar vise that goes into part of an adjustable hitch to hold the saw for sharpening in the woods.Works real nice.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Tools for cleaning out the boiler
« on: September 26, 2011, 05:39:09 PM »
Well I have to say I was lazy last spring.I never went back and cleaned out the ash from last winter :bash:
Oh well it looked the same as when i shut it down in the spring.Anyways I shoveled out all the ash and then used my rake a fabricated last year to rake out the gasification chamber and tunnels. Then I did what my buddy told me he does.I fired up the gas powered leaf blower and blew her out! >:D
Boy is that the cats meow to get a stove cleaned out!
I am filthy from it but it worked good.
I know I know pics are required but i don't figure the cloud and haze would have done a camera any good :photo:
Maybe you all do this ,but I had never tried it.My buddy swears by it ,and I will use mine for this from now on.Sure saves alot of time and hassle

Fire Wood / Wood storage platform
« on: September 26, 2011, 05:32:46 PM »
Ok the rain finally let up so I was able to get back behind the shop with the skidloader.I clear out a bunch of old skids and wood that was rotting and broken by the back fence row.Put down rows of cement blocks to hold up my solid skids I got from work last spring. They were used to ship in some gauge machines.I need to spray them down with oil to protect them better, but who knows if that will get done.Wife and my mom came out to see how it was going so I took a pic on my phone of my wife dancing around being silly. ;D

Fire Wood / Are you ready?
« on: September 13, 2011, 06:34:41 PM »
Just wondered who all has managed to get the years supply cut, split and stacked? :)
I know I have yet to even start cutting my logs up yet.I had hoped to start in the spring, but do to helping my mom tear her house down and then put a new modular in.There has been no time to do anything at my own house. :bash:
I hope to be done with most of her stuff by the end of the week, and maybe then start cutting and splitting.

General Discussion / anyone with a carport for a wood shed?
« on: February 19, 2011, 07:14:36 PM »
I am thinking of putting in one of these carports to stack my wood under and nose the front of my boiler into.I just wanted to get anyones opinion on how they like thiers if they have one.You see them adrvertised around here installed for around $750 and up.Cheap wood shed for the price.Plus I can move it and use it for something else later.
So anyone out there have one of these suckers? How durable are they?

Equipment / wood splitter info wanted
« on: February 05, 2011, 01:53:33 PM »
Does anybody here have a Timberwolf TW-6 splitter?
I have a friend who just got one.I have yet to see it ,but I know he LOVES it!I am quite impressed with the cycle times.I am thinking about building my own just like it.I have to send out a qoute to see about getting a custom cylinder made. The cylinder they run is not a stock style cylinder due to the larger rod.
Just looking for opinions from others on this model splitter.I have been using another friend's regular splitter, and I have to say that it sucks knowing that there is a better one out there.I will admit I am glad not to be doing it by hand.I was going to buy one,but my tax return is not going to be that large .So..I guess I am going to have to build one if I want to have one. >:D

General Discussion / Snow Storm!
« on: February 01, 2011, 02:30:18 PM »
Well the rain/sleet started around 1:30 here at Galveston,IN.I got off work in kokomo and my windshield was iced over.Got some gas for the Trailblazer(welder/generator) in case the ice gets bad and we lose power. ::)
Sleet is hammering the house right now.Drive is drifted shut from the snow last night.Didn't stop my Jeep Rubicon this morning though. After dinner here I am going out to the shop, and putting the tracks back on the skidloader.
I do have to say I love snow.Just hate the ice. :bash:

Equipment / saw chain holder
« on: January 29, 2011, 06:56:32 PM »
I am wanting to know what you guys do to haul your extra chain loops with you when you go out to the woods or your wood pile to cut wood?Do you throw them in a box,or in your saw case?Or do you have some sort of holder to put them in?
I am trying to come up with a deisgn for a case to hold my extra chains when I head out to the woods.Something to keep them organized and not all tangled up.
Thought I would pick your guys's brains ;)

General Discussion / Played out in the shop today.
« on: January 29, 2011, 06:32:27 PM »
Ok I sold my snowmobile 2 weeks ago,and I took the cash and picked  up a winch for my truck.I wanted it to use to unload logs off my trailer, and perhaps move logs in the woods if I don't have the skidloader with me.
So I was going to make a new winch bumper for the truck, but I don't have the materials all rounded up for that.I also needed to have it on the truck for tomorrow in case I need it.So I made a temporary mount for it for now,and will build a nice bumper later.I put a set of mounts low on the winch mount to attach a 5/8" shackle to either side.Tucks up real nice to the bumper.I like how it turned out for something I just threw together and put on for now.
This is a 13K winch I picked up at Greg Smith Equipment for $475.Has a wireless remote ,and the standard corded remote. It also came with the mounting channel that it is bolted on to also.
Now this is no Warn,Ramsey,or Superwinch ,but it will do what I want to do.
I really like the wireless remote. That will be really handy if I am by myself using it to drag logs off the trailer.
