Yea my cousins looks like a locomotive with coal

I think part of the smoke issue is having the stack exit directly out the top with no time for burning some of the gases

I think you are right Scott and that is not the best design but like AirForce said they work.

No doubt about that

Looks like some I've seen.  I've seen flames shooting 4 feet up out of the stack

Yeah, mine will shoot flames every once in a while but usually only when I load it full with smaller split pieces.  It looks pretty cool too!

There is no secondary burn chamber at all? if you look down the chimney you can see the wood in there?

Yup, the chimney doesn't stick down into the firebox either.  Just a hole at the top.

Are you interested in doing an experiment on it? If there is no extra space inside to put a plate you could try making an external secondary burn chamber. Just to see if would work you could use an old steel barrel. It would probably work best to put it on it's side. Cut a hole at one end for the chimney and one on the opposite side and end for the smoke to exit. I would also put a small fan on it to blow air in right where the smoke enters and is the hottest.

If it works something could be made up that was water jacketed to collect the heat it generates.

Is it aluminum? The fire in the secondary chamber could get hot enough to ignite aluminum. You need steel.

I'm assuming it is aluminum.  I doubt I would ever have the time to tinker with it but it sounds like a good idea.
