Title: Just ordered my Fiskars x27 splitting axe
Post by: Scott7m on February 22, 2012, 07:52:55 PM
I have a small fiskars hatchet that I love.  So decided to order the x27.  Good to have laying by the wood shed and if I really get ambitious I may use it to split most of my wood.

I had a friend helping me cut wood last year and when we were in red oak 24" diameter, he could split it with a regular maul into 6-8 pieces before I got the next piece cut off with a 038 magnum lol.  Wish he was always up for splittin wood

I love mine! Sears only had the pro splitter which I think the only difference between that and the x27 is the handle length.  I think I will buy the x27 some time this year though.  I really like it so far and they are really light!

I ordered mine on amazon, 49 dollars.  Hoping it will be here tomorrow, have a big white pine down that I'd like to split up.

I ordered mine from Amazon last fall and it was $45.01
I was kind of disappointed with it because the way everyone talks about them I figured I could just sit and watch it do all the work by itself.  :o
It does split good though. lol

Really, how does it compare to a regular maul?

Splits a little better than the maul did that I was using. It was a Craftsman 6 or 8 pounder I was using.
It doesn't tire me out like the maul did though. I can keep going way longer.

They sure get rave reviews, hope I'm not disappointed

There are a few videos on YouTube of people using them.  I was splitting 2 ft diameter locust in two swings the other day.  Gotta keep it sharp though

Does all the wood still have to be dry for the fiskars x27 to even stand a chance?

16" splits seem to be OK, longer lengths, 20" plus seem more an issue, especially if they are wet/hard etc. Then you get the odd piece which seems a real problem no matter what.

It should beat a maul in all situations based on what I've read

Well I got it in, works very well and is def better than a maul.  I tried to split sycamore with it and the sycamore laughed tho lol

On oak it just shatters it with ease

Just got my x27, too and it works great on willow. It doesn't work that well on ash or elm, but that could be because they're still too wet?

Elm doesn't split good with anything but ash should split easy. Did you try a splitting maul on the same wood?

I'm not that good at tree identification so i thought it was either elm or ash. It could be just elm if it splits hard. I haven't tried my 16lb maul vs the x27 on the same wood yet. I will pick out a drier piece of wood 2maro and compare the two and post my results.

Ash should split easy

Tried splitting some 10-16" green pine today with the fishers, the pine laughed at me

Yeah, me too. So I decided to get the speeco 22t log splitter. Timberwolf looked bad ass, but I only use the wood to heat my house so couldn't convince myself to spend that kinda coin. It has split everything I through at it so far. I think as with anything maintaining equipment and operation is key.

I have had something like this for several years. I had one with a fiberglass ax handle and it disappeared for a while so I bought this one http://www.lowes.com/pd_147592-302-1217000_0__?productId=3013823&Ntt=ax&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dax&facetInfo= (http://www.lowes.com/pd_147592-302-1217000_0__?productId=3013823&Ntt=ax&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dax&facetInfo=) My brother in law thought it was a joke the first time I brought it out but he hasn't gone back to a maul since. This is cheaper than the fiskars as well.

This doesn't seem to have very good reviews.  I would say that the extra $20 is probably worth it to go with the Fiskars.

I'm reviving an old thread but I bought the x27 last week and think it's a pretty good little splitter.

I can't say it's magical or even splits wood sitting by the truck like some people suggest but it does have
its own nitch.

It can go through most wood without knots easily. I busted 24" rounds of red oak in half (1) swing, pine
no prob but locust was an issue. If your wood is much longer than 2' or has knots it gets kind of hard but over
all I'm satisfied.

I normally don't miss my target but while giving this thing all I could I slammed the handle behind the head
hard and not even a scratch.

Just got mine for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. Tried it out on a piece of cottonwood I had and it split it but still had to work at it. But I couldn't even get my maul to stick in it. Just bounced off. The nice thing is it is about a third of the weight. I wasn't really tired after using it.
