Portage & Main / Re: bl 28-40 front air chamber plugging
« on: April 04, 2017, 05:23:12 PM »
I have had my bl-2840 for three years now and I'm still struggling to keep the air flowing. I'm ready to turn it off next weekend and I know that everything is now plugged as the air flow is really bad and burning much more wold then I should. To say the least I'm a little disappointed with the product as this issue is really impacting the amount of wood burned and the amount of effort required to keep it going. Is it worth me calling PM to see if they have a fix for the issue?

Portage & Main / Saw Dust with wood mix
« on: September 01, 2016, 07:47:40 PM »
There is a saw mill about 30 minutes away that sells large loads of saw dust mixed with limited wood scraps. I have heard from others that people buy this and put it into there wood boilers. I have a BL-2840 and was wondering if anyone has tried this. Just wondering if it is work me getting a load this winter to mix in with my wood.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

Portage & Main / Wood Pellets
« on: September 01, 2016, 02:55:38 PM »
I have a BL 2840 and I have been using it for two season - by far the best investment that I have ever made. I'm wondering if anyone has tried burning wood pellets in their BL? Would be interested to understand if there where any issues and what burn time were like.

nice looking setup, I need to build something like that for my boiler, keeping it all indoors would be awesome.

I have been running since the second week of oct. and will not be turning off until May - had some warm days - so just using for hot water - but has started to get cooler now and furnace is on. Have 32 face cords so I'm good for the season

I had my bl2840 running last weekend but turned it off on Monday. going to be cool tonight but warm during the day for the rest of the weekend - looking like it will be another week before I turn it on again - this time for the rest of the season.

Fire Wood / Are you Ready???
« on: September 30, 2015, 05:51:57 PM »
Is everyone ready for this winter season. I live in southern ontario Canada and it has been warmer then normal and haven't had to light my boiler yet. Based on the weather forecast looks like it may be two or three more weeks before I do. I have about 32 face cords of wood stacked for the winter - hoping it will be enough to last two winters - will see

I started using a hard rake but the hoe may be better  choice, I'll have to try it this year and see if it makes a difference.

Portage & Main / Ash Plugged
« on: September 29, 2015, 05:43:34 PM »
When I cleaned out my 2840 after the first season I found that most of the spaces between the firebrick where plugged with ash - I'm assuming this is why I burned more wood then i expected. It was my first season so there was a big learning curve. Before the end of the season I started to rack out the boiler really good and I had less ash build up. I'm wondering if others have had the same issue and if they have a way to clean between the bricks as the boiler is running. i was thinking of making up a tool to poke the ash and ensure everything is clean. Thoughts?

Fire Wood / Re: Enough Wood?

This is my first year with my OWB and I burned more wood then I thought as well. I'm still burning and based on the long range forecast I will be until late April. I have around 14 face cords cut, not split or stacked, starting that process now. Plan to cut at least another 10 face cords. I want to ensure I have more then enough for next winter.

I see PM has some solar panels on there site, links don't work but I'm wondering if they offer a hookup to there boilers.

I'm interested In getting one to hookup to my 2840, only question us if it would work since it is really not designed for that brand. I bet that during the winter it wild help reduce wood usage and allow for high water during the drummer without burning wood.

Pools & Hot Tubs / Re: Thinking about got tub setup
« on: March 13, 2015, 05:28:47 PM »
I ordered a kit from my dealer.  I think it was $400 or so.  It came with a Ranco thermostat and well, 24v transformer, three-way valve, stainless tube exchanger, and very little instructions!  But, with some help from the guys on this very forum, I got it in and I've heated my hot tub for two seasons now with no problems.  In fact, I removed the heating element from the tub.  I felt like it was one of my more complicated components of my install, mainly because I had to modify my tub plumbing.  That can get a little hairy.  It makes your tub time even more relaxing knowing that it's heated from your stove!!

Do you find that you burn a lot more wood with the hot tub connected? Just wondering if it is worth the extra work and cost. Let me know your thoughts.
