Nother broken chain!!! :bash:
« on: February 21, 2016, 11:46:19 AM »

Broke two chains theses last couple of days.
Todays hit me in the shin.
026 with 18 inch bar... sthil chain.
Been using the saw for a few years, bought it used.
I have never broken a chain before, so I don't think it's that common.
I know the bar is a little long for the saw, but bar seems to be in ok condition.
Stuck the depth guide in and it's within specs [just. ]
Any ideas????

http://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/ever-had-a-chainsaw-chain-break.117594/

Read this and most people that break chains,, hit something.
That, or they wiggle it when stuck,, and weaken it.
I may have got the old chain stuck and wiggled it,,but not the newer one,,,that I remember.
Chain break happens more than I thought,,though.

Taking it into Sthil dealer and see what they say.

How were they re-sharpened? I have seen where someone set the sharpener too deep and hit the link and caused chains to break.

I don't know if a worn sprocket could cause a chain to break, but Stihl (at least in my manual) recommends replacing the sprocket every 2nd chain.

I sharpen the chains by hand, only did the new one once.[it broke today]

Looking into the sprocket change for sure.[good call]
Taking it in to dealer tomorrow.
Gonna switch to 16 inch bar also.

I have had a few chains break over the years. One was jammed, another hit an I beam at work, the third one was for no apparent reason I put a few new links in it and it never broke again.

Got back from the Sthil store.
Tech did not know for sure, why chains broke.
He agreed changing the drive sprocket was a good idea.
It was hacked up a bit.
So I got a new sproket and chain for my 18 inch bar ,,and a 16 inch bar and chain.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Keep us updated. Recently, I put on a chain I had sharpened and it would lock-up either while coming up on RPM or going down. Called the dealer and he said if a chain gets thrown it can booger-up the guides and cause it to lock-up. My wife did have a chain throw off a while back so that must have been the one.

What do you mean by "guides"??
I did have a lot of chain freeze ,it was from snow getting sucked into the saw body.
This happened prior to the chains breaking.
I'll post any new info,, but if anyone else has input......... great!

I have never broken a chain, but I have had a chain throw and it messed up the guides so it wouldn't move on the saw. The guide is what keeps the chain on the bar. Hard to see that their bad too, not very obvious.
Good luck

So there is a guide bar ["the bar"] then there's the guides?
I take it the guides are the two flaps of thin metal in the drive sprocket compartment?
Mine look good.
Gotta get out and try the new 16 inch bar and chain sprocket.
Got a blizzard coming in,, so let you know in a couple of days

Kommandokenny, I apologize that I used some wrong terminology. The guide that I'm referring to is called the drive link [after looking it up]. It rides down in the bar groove.
Sorry about that. Good luck

No problem Fireman.
I see what the drive links are.
Don't think that was my issue, as one chain was near new.
I'm examining the bar further and noticed its uneven on one side.
Apparently if the guide bar does not stand up by itself on a flat surface, it should be replaced.
Mine stands on one side but not the other.

I'll see if I break a chain with the new bar,if not, could of been the old bar???
