Portage & Main / Re: P & M Chip Burner

Richard is a good man.  He installed my Optimizer 250 last fall and then attached it to our pool this summer.  I would recommend him, his work, and P&M to anyone in the market in the northeast.

I am currently not using my 250 for HW during the summer months.  You guys have me thinking.

I wonder how much the wood cost (cords & $$$'s) vs. the propane cost would be.  Anyone figure that out?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / There has to be a better way...

With warmer temps I am generating more creosote in the heat exchangers.  Until recently they were easy to clean with the flue brush and braided stainless extender that came with my P&M 250.

I guess my drill finally got the better of the braided metal and turned it into a metal pretzel.  I straighten it, but it twists up easier with each cleaning.  There has got to be a better way.  :bash: Does anyone have this one figured out already?

Another NH guy...excellent.  I have a Portage & Main Optimizer 250.  After my research I decided on the PM over Central Boiler, but do your your research and choose what makes the most sense for you.

My unit heats 3000 square feet, heats my HW, and will soon be heating my pool.

I am over on the seacoast.  Let me know if you want to come over & check it out.

One more step towards getting off the grid.  If generating electricity from an OWB is viable I'd be interested.

Richard from Mainly Custom installed my P&M Optimizer 250 at the end or December/beginning of January this year.  I would heartily recommend him to friends, family, or anyone who wants an important job done right.  He is honest, beyond thorough, and is always there when you need him with questions/concerns etc.

This is important since I am brand new to the world of OWB's and needed a certain level of hand holding...especially at the beginning with the learning curve.

He is coming down in May to install a plate to plate heat exchanger so the OWB can heat our pool.

As far as the P&M 250.  We love it.  I am heating 3100 square feet on two zones and will be adding radiators to the garage.  Prior to the OWB we had been heating with propane (FHA) and paid an average of $7200 per year over the past 5 years.  When going through the selection process I figured it would be roughly a 3 year break even and it looks like we will do a little better than that.  Enough so that I went out an picked up a new MS441.  Who knows, maybe I'll add a splitter once I get this OWB paid off.   Good luck and let me know if you have any detailed questions.

Portage & Main / Re: Very happy with the 250

It is amazing how fast the family & dogs get used to keeping the house at 72 during our first winter with the P&M 250.  Prior, when heating with propane, we kept it at 62.  Crazy!

My P&M 250...is there such a thing as too much wood?

Portage & Main / Very happy with the 250
« on: January 31, 2012, 10:08:24 AM »
I have had the 250 up and running now for several weeks and I could not be happier.  The house has never been warmer and I am using less wood (by far) than I had anticipated.

My installer, Richard at Mainely Custom was great and I recommend him highly.  I worked direct with Brian at the factory in purchasing the unit and water lines and they were equally great to deal with.  Both were, and continue to be, easy to reach and more than happy to answer questions.

The unit itself is great but definitely has a learning curve.  So many variables with outside temp, wind, type of wood, and btu demand from the house that I am trying to measure/project; this is more of an art than a science  :D

I'm new here too...install just completed in December.

I am having similar issues.  You revered to the tool with the hook on it that came with the unit.  I dont recall getting one of those.  Can you attache a picture so I can get or make one?  Thanks,
Matt
