Absolutely not. Northern Tool has a nice one for under $200. I paid $150 for it about 8 years ago, came with  3 different sized grinding wheels. Works great used almost daily. No problems. I think you can also find the same one at farm stores.....TSC/Family Farm and Home

Check Ebay for used name brand, that's how I got my Oregon sharpener.

I have a harbor freight special bolted to my bench. I still pay someone else to sharpen my chains. I tried it about 10 times and never had any luck.

I actually have one and use it all the time, I've found that you have to hold your chain still in the tool and not rely on the clamps and tool to hold it steady , rather you hold it by hand so the angle doesnt change, Ive been more than impressed by it and would buy another. i talked to a friend of mine who has a commercial shop and uses the commercial versions and he says you have to hold them with all of them that over time they get sloppy , I know someone will disagree but I like mine , its a 35 ,oo dollar sharpener that's paid for its self  10 times over and i can consistently get a sharp chain with it , like any other tool its only as good as the person running it . as far as sharpening with a file forget about it , mine always cut circles

I have had one for the past 3 years and the only problem I had with it was the wheel broke.  Other than that, it works great.  As the other poster said, you have to hold it as you sharpen.  It does work great though for the cost.  If this one broke I would buy another !!!

Learn to do it by hand.  Put the bar in a vice and go at it.  You will never go back to a electric sharpener once you have mastered it!

a wise man knows his limitations and overcomes them

I cant sharpen a chain saw with a file and I cant lay brick , lay 2 and throw 3

I buy a sharpener for the chain and pays some one to lay the brick

Actually a few people absolutely swear by the Timberline sharpener, keeps every tooth the same and also keeps the nice little hook in them that a file leaves.

I have the Northern Tool sharpener and like it. Got it a few years ago for $99, you can still get them for under $150 on sale. No problems with it at all. I sharpen friends chains for a 6 of bottled Bud, it has paid for itself!

Sorry but I've been trying for twenty years to master hand filing and have failed miserably.   There's no hope for me, I'm going electric!

I really like the Timberline. Well manufactured, easy to use & you don't need electric to run it.  Works great in the woods ! Stay warm...

I jsut got a timber tuff at tsc. Seems like a well built unit. Had a harbor freight but ditched it because of lack of adjustments and only being able to run the small wheel on it.
