Water heater side arm.
« on: January 29, 2017, 07:43:09 PM »

I am wondering how I could tap off the existing 1" line and run a half inch line to my side arm.  It would be a 20 foot run from my heat exchanger in the furnace.  What I want to do is run a separate line with a small pump off the main line and pump though the side arm and return after the heat exchanger instead of running the line all the way to the water heater then back to the furnace and then back to the stove outside.  How do I go about this?  Can I simple run a T with a pump lower than the main feed and then T back into the main line after the furnace?  I have been told this will be more efficient possibly, I'm not sure myself if it would be. I do know when the water heater needs by water I get a large draw of heat and my furnace temps aren't what I want them to be after the water comes from the water heater.  I could run a larger pump on the stove and a small taco 007 for the water heater loop.  Is there a better way I could go about this?  Thank you in advance.

Sounds like you don’t have enough flow to start with.

An easier way to go about this is to get a mono flo T and place it right before the sidearm, hook the side arm to the bull nose of the T, out of the other end of the T run that to the heat exchanger.

What are you using for line and what pump is on the stove? A sidearm really shouldn’t pull that hard, biggest drop i’ve seen on mine is 5 degrees. Still have a feeling if you up your flow, this won’t be a problem anymore.

I have a feeling my pump may be taking a dump too as it has been getting louder.  It is the factory broeder 20gpm pump.  Last time I tested it, it was doing about 7-8 gpm.  Based on my calculations and some help from RSI I have figured I am around 17 feet of head with my loop and restrictions.  The pump was spot on but now it may be dying and I planned ahead getting another when this one got loud.  I think I may try exactly what you mentioned or I might dump the side arm and go with a 30 plate exchanger and ditch the water heater tank all together.  My new pump is a 40gpm Eltron so I have doubled my size.  Thanks mlappin for your suggestions.

Edit: my line is o2 barrier 1" closed foam pipe.  It's not logstore i know that.  If I recall correctly the name started with an "r" if that sounds right.  Got it from the local stove guy. Said it was the best he carried. Seems to be good.  I never see any snow melt where it was buried.

Doubling your pump will just eat more juice, only so much water can be forced thru lines before electric consumption goes up with very little increase in flow. What size are your underground lines?

Sorry I edited my last post as I forgot to add that part you asked about.  I was told (just going off what I was told as I do not know) that as the pump can only push so much the power usage will run basically as the speed of the pump can push water.  I do know the Eltron is only 200 watt high speed 40gpm 40 feet of head max high efficiency pump.  My broeder is 20 gpm 200 watt on high 39 feet max pump.

What model is the Eltron pump you got? I thought they were closer to 30' of head.

I'm not sure.  It's in the basement and I'm on the couch.  When I get up for bed I'll take a look.

If you need a pump in the 40' range, I would go with either a B&G PL36 or Armstrong E9.2
They are quite a bit more efficient.

I can't return this Eltron pump, I tried but it's past the 30 days so I'm stuck with it.  I did try right away after your advise but I'll have to wait for the Armstrong until it's time for another.

So you didn't get it from Menards? I didn't think they had a time limit.
If you got a good deal on it then it is probably worth using. They are overpriced at Menards which is why I suggested returning it.

I got it online along with the second broeder for the garage loop.  This was before you suggested something else.  I found the Eltron at menards but got it about 40 bucks less on fleabay.  Something I can put in the live and learn mental notes.  If I didn't find this site I would have been clueless to what is considered good and what's not when it comes to pumps especially thanks to you RSI for all the help as well.  i would have an Armstrong or grundofos instead of a broeder and Eltron but I will use what I have for now.  Who knows I could get as lucky as I did with the first one and get 2 full years out of it.
