How often do you sharpen your chain?

I know the correct answer is "when it gets dull" but about how long is that for you in terms of gas tanks?

50...?

Let's say cutting for firewood, which includes bucking some wood that is laying down already for who knows how long.  Not strictly falling clean trees and bucking.

On really clean wood I give the chain 2 tanks provided its cutting really good..Other than that, pretty much a tank and then give the chain a quick file..Very dirty wood maybe a half tank or less..Also filing your rakers down helps too..Theres nothing better than a sharp chain

I'm pretty much the same as what he ^ said. Sharpening heat treated cutters sucks, ruined too many files while out in the field trying to finish that last little bit.

Since most of my wood lays on the ground for a few months before I get to it, one tank is pretty much the standard. Seems strange to me that they laugh or think I'm peculiar for doing that.  ...Well, maybe I am but I like to cut rather than burn through it.

Usually two tanks, sometimes three or more if I'm cutting clean softwood, other times it can be one tank or less.  Last weekend I was cutting some really dirty beech that had been down for 2+ years, and dulled the chain right quick.  Sharpened it and started cutting again, only to realize I hadn't sharpened it enough, so I had to do it all over again after running the saw less than two minutes.
