How much of a load are you running on the boiler?

I put my pro 400 on 8" solid blocks and made a 12x14 pad with crushed stone.  It works well and is a lot easier and less expensive.  I also was thinking if I ever had to dig up my lines for some reason they go under the pad so it would be easier.

My guess is 9 cords.

I looked at the floor/air sensing thermostat.

I think I will try one next year and see how it works.

Thanks

I have tried to use the priority but when it is real cold by the time the priority zone is satisfied the other zones are calling.  I spoke to Empyre and they don't want me to run the temp above 180.

I am using a uponor thermostat made for radiant heat and it has a 1 degree differential.

Plumbing / Temp drop on radiant heat
« on: February 14, 2014, 09:28:00 PM »
I am currently running a empyre pro 400.  In my barn which is 5000 sq ft I have radiant infloor heat in the slab on the first floor and staple up under the sub floor on the second floor.  When I have more than one large zone call for heat the return temps drop significantly.  My temp can be at 180 and if I have 2 of the larger zones call at the same time the "optimizer" or thermostatic valve will kick in so the temp going back to the boiler won't drop below 140.  I know this is protecting the boiler which is fine but just wondering what I can do to try and prevent this.  I am currently running the boiler at 180 with a 5 degree differential.  I have 1" Logstor feeding the barn.  It is 130 foot run one way from the boiler to the 80 plate heat exchanger exchanger.  I have six zones of heat with the 2 larger zones have 8 loops of approx 280' of 1/2 pex.  I am running a Armstrong 9.2 pump.  The run from the boiler to the house has 1-90 and 6-45 degree bends.

Just wondering if I put a larger pump in would that help or should I just live with it.  It just seems to take a long time for the boiler to recover after this occurs.

Thanks for any help.

If you have power going to the blower and it is not working then there is something wrong with the blower itself.

Do you have power going to the blower?

I clean mine out every two days or so.  I can usually tell when it is having trouble getting up temp it is time to clean the secondary chamber.  I usually have mostly fine ash.  The large embers should be pretty well burned up.

I don't do it to 'code'. I have a dedicated Generator plug outside. I run a 10/3 wire and backfeed a 30 amp 220 breaker. I shut down my main breaker and then throw my generator breaker. I shut off my oven and drier breakers so no one accidentally runs them. I have put an amp meter on each leg from the generator and even with the well pump starting and my fha fan starting I don't bump over 18 amps. We try to run as few lights as possible while on generator power.

Don't do it like this. This is how people get killed!!

I have been installing the interlock kits lately just because it is nice to be able to use any circuits when the power is out.  The only thing you have to be careful of is not turning everything on at once.  Turn the cicruits on one a time and only the circuit you need.

My barn is 44 x 60.  I have 4 car garage in front half on the first floor and shop in the back half of first floor.  The second floor is not done yet but is just going to be living space.  Not sure yet what we are going to use it for.

I am heating my house and barn which is about 8000 sq ft. total.  Tomorrow I will take a picture of it when I fill it.  The firebox is pretty big.  It will take a 34" log.  This years wood I cut at 24" because I didn't know what I was going to get for a boiler.  The wood I am cutting now for next year I am cutting 30".  I think that will help my burn times.

Empyre / Re: empyre pro 200 first impressions!
« on: January 06, 2014, 03:32:46 PM »
After cleaning mine yesterday I let it get way down and it took a couple hours to get everything back up and running well again.  I don't like to let it get too low.  Today I filled it 3/4 at 6 am and when I got home around 5 pm it was pretty low.  It was warm today so I was burning junk poplar.  I want to save my oak for when I need it.
