That makes sense.  Thanks.  In the house I have a conventional boiler and I am planning to do the same thing but I have baseboard heat there.  That boiler is 115,000 BTU?  What size plate would I need for that and I was planning to use 1" pvc.  The run from the boiler to the house is 180 ft.

Thanks Scott and RSI for the response.  I will probably just turn the temp on the wall hung boiler down and use it as emergency back-up.  When you say put the plate exchanger in series you just mean to extended the supply and return manifolds and install the plate exhanger there correct.

Plumbing / Questions about piping for futue owb
« on: March 10, 2013, 10:46:44 AM »
I am getting ready to install an OWB this summer.  I got my grapple load of wood and got that all cut.  I am trying to get ready for the plumbing part of the install.  This is for my barn.  I have six zones of radiant heat and domestic hot water.  I have attached a sketch showing my current heating system with a gas wall hung boiler.  I am just wondering if I can just extend off the manifold to a plate exchanger and run the system pump that is currently there 24/7 through the wall hung boiler or do I need to be able to bypass the wall hung boiler when not in use?  That boiler is 225,000 BTU wondering what size plate exchanger I should use?

The barn is new construction with 2x6 walls and good insualtion.  The size is 60 x 44 two floors.  I have radiant in the slab on the first floor and under the wood floor on the second floor.

I would greatly apprciate any help with this.  If I am leaving out any information let me know.

Thanks

I have been looking at the 350 as a possiblity for a new OWB.  Just wondering how you are making out with it.

Yes.  I was going to run 2 lines one for house and one for barn.  I was just wondering on if I should go 1" for house and 1 1/4" for barn.

The OWB is going to be around 100 feet from where it enters the barn.  Then to get through the barn and into the house is another 100 feet.

Also with a system like this I am assuming I would just run the pumps on the OWB 24/7.

Thanks for the pictures.  It is always nice to see how other people do things.

What size HZ is that?  Do you size them according to the size of the boiler that is currently heating the load?  My boiler in my basement that I heat the house with is 115,000 BTU and the wall hung in my barn is 165,000 BTU.

I was thiking about using 1" for the house and 1 1/4" for the barn.  Does that seem right?

Thanks in advance for all the great information.

Do you just put the plate heat exhanger on the supply side of the loop off the boiler?

I am planning to install gasification OWB and plumb to my wall hung boiler for radiant heat and DHW.  I want to have it so I can still the run the wall hung boiler in the summer for DHW.  Is a hydraulic seperator the best way to go?

Thanks for all the great input.  The house is a ranch style log home with finish basement.  I have oil forced hw for heat and dhw about 1150 sq ft. per floor.  The breezeway between the barn and house is 325 sq ft with radiant heat under the wood floor supplied from the gas fired wall hung boiler in barn.  The barn has radiant in the slab for the first floor which is 2700 sq ft. and 10 ft. ceiling.  The second floor is going to have radiant under the floor which is also 2700 sq ft..  I have 2 x6 walls with r-19 batt and then I am going over the whole thing with 1/2 rigid foil faced insulation.  The ceiling is cathedral about 12' high.

One other thing I am thinking about doing is adding solar hot water off the boiler.  I had thought about doing solar hot water before the boiler but then I saw people using the boiler for storage which I thougt was a good idea.  Does anyone have any ideas on this thought?

I have been reading alot about different boilers and everyone seems to have positives and negatives.  The empyre seems to be a good boiler but the storage is only 115 gallons.  If I was to put solar on this I think I would have to add storage.

Any feedback on these ideas would be greatly appreciated.

With only 115 gal water jacket do you need extra water storage to run efficiently.
