Cleaning boiler w/vinegar
« on: May 07, 2012, 06:55:44 AM »

The house we purchased has a Wood Master 4400 and it has been drained to prevent freezing so it has been sitting empty for the last six months. A plan to refill it and maybe put a bottle of vinagar in it and circulate for and hour or so then redrain it and fill it. Does that sound like a good plan? It also has a heat exchanger for the hot water heater if that matters.

I would just circulate it for a bit then drain it and see what comes out..I wouldn't bother put a bottle of vinager it in it

I don't think a bottle would be enough to do anything.

Thanks. I just wondered if there was any scale build up if it would remove it. I'll flush it really good and see what comes out.

this was my first winter with a owb so I am a noob, but I would not put vinegar in it, I would run clean fresh water trough it letting the old water out until it runs clean then I would fill it and add the central boiler water treatment to it.

Okay. I now have the boiler flushed and filled for the summer. I just need to get the treatment. How often do you run your circulation pumps during the summer?

Yotehunter, you need to get the correct amount of water treatment/corrosion inhibitor into you furnace ASAP. Since you already refilled with water after flushing and no treatment, you now have water, metal and oxygen all coming together. That equals rust. You will probalby see the water start to yellow in a matter of days.
