My guess is the server hosting renewal came up and maybe the debit or credit card used to pay the fee expired.

I sent an email to the domain owner yesterday and asked if they knew the site was gone and if they were shutting it down if we could get it. I didn't get a reply but wonder if they got the email and didn't know the site was down.

Not really, server space/use needs renewed yearly. Debit or credit cards are only good for so long….

The error code that showed up a few times suggested the server was down...
