I have a Speeco 35 ton splitter that works good but it slow and a real pain working with larger logs. I came across this but not sure if will just end up being a pile of scrap. https://madison.craigslist.org/grd/6011143106.html

Lol, I think you are right. It was the 6 way wedge that got me looking at it.
I think I will build a platform for the speeco to hold wood to make it easier to split. Or maybe just get an upside down splitter for on the Toolcat.

You have a tool cat!!?? I'm jealous! I know one can build a splitter that uses external hyd. power for under a grand. Having an engine/pump brings the price up 4-600. If you have one of those awesome tool cats I'd build one!

If it works and the cylinder is good, its defiantly worth it. Especially if you know how to fabricate and wrench on things.

My personal opinion, which may not be worth a hill of beans.
1: angle on the u-joints in the one picture look to be a bit extreme, may have awful vibration issues while running at speed under load.
2: I beam looks to be way too light for a 6 way wedge and the size of the hydraulic cylinder, may resemble a pretzel in short order.
3: six way wedge is made incorrectly, with the lower one bevel side up when it starts to split its going to wedge that piece of wood into the top one. Simple fix would be to move the top one back at least a few inches.
It might have $500 worth of hoses, pumps and cylinder on it though, a good welded cylinder isn’t cheap even thru the surplus centers.

Oh boy, sure doesn't appear to be osha approved either ha ha! The 6 way should be removable or adjustable as well.

That as well. From personal experience with the firewood processor if your going with a multiple split wedge, you want it adjustable somehow or you will end up with tons of wood slivers when that multiple wedge is just skimming a piece of wood as it goes thru.

What no comment on the OSHA approval, someday I'll get a pic of my old home made dinosaur, you will get a chuckle, between the bungee cords and dog chain it works pretty good!

Never owned a store bought splitter. Maybe only ever used one once or twice. Seemed like a lot of money for something I could build myself. Finding the parts is 90% of the project and knowing how to fabricate is the rest of it. We have buit several of them from salvaged pistons and surplus steel parts. Finding a good 2 stage pump can be difficult , but they aren't that bad at Surplus Center. Sometimes if you can find a good carcas that someone else has collected the parts for you you could do a lot with it. Personally having run 2 different splitters we built in the past off of either the PTO or the tractors remote hydraulics I would put its own power on it. You burn through a lot of fuel and put a lot of wear on the tractor running it at constant speed for several hours. Now with that said if you happen to have one of these new fancy tractors they don't mind as much or if you have a 1000 rpm pto and can run the tractor slow to make it work you might consider it. OH and as far as osha is concerned it only protects people working for you. So if you don't pay anyone who helps you build whatever you want. >:D

I emailed the guy about it and he said he would recommend removing the 6 way wedges. That is the only reason I was looking at it to start with.
I will just stay with the Speeco for now.

No not really, I’m sure an OSHA inspector would shut my firewood processor down immediately if they seen it. Most other things around the farm we make sure is shielded well from having extra help during harvest and everybody is reminded constantly that anything at anytime can self start on the drying setup and even with the signs saying so I’m sure an inspector could find fault wit something sooner or later since the common denominator anymore is a nanny state that doesn’t think it’s citizens should have to take any responsibility for anything.
