Electronics / What are my options...
« on: January 19, 2015, 06:27:15 AM »
So over the weekend I noticed that the fan on my indoor gas furnace (I KNOW, I KNOW -> belt and suspender!!! its a back up) start this high pitch squeal.  The noise is consistant, in pitch and frequency meaning when fan is on, so is the annoying squeal

Question is, does this sound as bad as I think it is?  Is there a chance I will be able to repair this, or do I just go buy a new blower?

Fire Wood / New technique for Shoulder season heating
« on: May 06, 2014, 07:04:50 AM »
Not sure if anyone else has experimented with loading their boiler differently durign these "Shoulder" season.  I know most people will just load there boilers with less wood during the shoulder season, and get by.

I have recently tried a new method, that seems to work for me.  So here is the basic theory/practice, behind my madness.  Instead laying the wood lengthwise on the bottom of the firebox, as you should durign the main heating season.  I stand the blocks of wood on end in the firebox; so in theory I am just burning the end of the block not the entire side, if it were laid down.

I relaize that this may affect my burn/ideal/recovering time in OWB, but in general my calles for heat are rather long (7k total sf of inslab) can take DAYS to heat up if I don't start it on time

Seems like it would be pretty rough on the wrists...

Fire Wood / Weekend Project ::)
« on: April 07, 2014, 07:36:44 AM »
So a few weeks, maybe month back, my dad got one of his loggin buddies to sell him some "Firewood", he bought by the semi load about 20 "PULP WOOD" cords (2x semi loads) - 1st mixed Poplar, white birch, and some soft Maple; 2nd load all ASH.

So what did we do this weekend, blocked and split till our arms about fell off; old man has two surgically repair rotator cuffs, an artificial hip and double carpal tunnel surgery (by age 57); worked up between 3 and 6 cords (I am horrible and estimating, unless we are loading the duallie).  My wife and mother come out in the afternoon on Sunday and says, it doesn't look like you made much progress!   :o THANKS for the encouragement!!!  Maybe next January they will be more appreciative.

...or more technically pellet burners

So which one of you guys on the East Coast volunteered for this article  ;D

??? It kind of technically runs on Ethanol, I guess??

I see lots of posts about different application/heating systems and understand that people choose all different system for different reasons ($$$, time, experience, familiarity, location) and was justing interested to see what the mix was.

PLEASE PLEASE if you select "Other" include pictures

Equipment / That was scary!!!!
« on: December 31, 2013, 08:34:55 AM »
So over the Xmas week had several rounds of relatives thru the house and staying over, and had one VERY nervouse aunt who said that she smelled gas or LP out side.  Well after everyone left and I had time to recover from a hangover or two I had to get to the bottum of this problem.

Called out the gas man to check for leaks, DING DING DING, we had a winner - no not a line or fitting leaking; the control valve for the LP back up generator had frozen (temps in MN the last 2 weeks averaged -10) and was leaking.  So I had to break out the heat gun (electric, not gas) and thaw out the valve and cook out all the moisture.

Now I know this doesn't sound all that scary, OK gas leaks are danagerous not going to lie; I forget to mention OWB is less than 15' from generator  :o THANK GOD I DIDN'T BLOW UP on one of the hundred times I have run out to fill the OWB in the last month.

Plumbing / Spaghetti FEST
« on: December 17, 2013, 09:44:14 AM »
So does anyone have a really good picture of the spaghetti works that is there mechanical room?  :pic:
Its always nice to see how other people have plumbed and piped there boilers, heat exchangers and whatnot.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Snow melting sidewalks
« on: December 03, 2013, 02:32:00 PM »
I was wondering if anyone here uses heat from their OWB to purposely melt snow from sidewalks, aprons or patios.

Reason I ask is that I recently built a house heated by CB e-Classic 2400 and I was thinking about running pipe in the concrete before sidewalks and aprons are poured??  I was just wondeirng how hard it is on the boiler and how often do you have to refill fire box??  Will definately seperate snowmelt from boiler with a HX and mixing valve, so I can run glycol and not shock OWB.

Central Boiler / Story of trouble shooting house heat
« on: December 02, 2013, 11:51:27 AM »
Have been running my 2400 for 3rd year now, heating a 4000 sf "Garage"/living area; all inslab radiant

Over the coarse of the summer built house, about 3500 sf; mix of inslab and under floor.  Went to fire up house a couple of weeks back and everything worked great, accept very little to no flow in slab.  Wasn't too concerned at this point cause it wasnt cold. Well 3 weeks later its getting cold and I had to get serious about finding problem, cause it dodnt fix itself; so here is how I proceeded:
1) Checked each loop top make sure I had not crossed between manifolds  (Check, hooked up right)
2) Checked supply/return lines to ensure they did not get crossed  (Check, hooked up right)
3) Check plumbing in Mech room (Everything good except 3-way mixing valve installed backwards - resolved)
4) Though pump was under sized (dropped in a Grundfos 26-99, WAY OVERKILL)
    STILL NOTHING :bash:
5) Finally, starting tearing everything apart, to replumb again
WALA - found a check valve that had fallen out of original pump, got flipped around and fell down supply pipe - so here I was trying trying to pump again a check valve.
Removed stupid *%&^ check valve and it works, heat.
