thanks scott, well im finally heating my addition without insulation so a total of 2200 sq ft and i can still get 20 hrs between fills. i have infloor heat and when i went to turn on the floor in the addition it froze so it took about two weeks of heating it with an old cast iron radiator before it let loose, doin good tho i just need to get it insulated so i can save some wood.

Shaver Furnace / Re: HELP! I hate my SHAVER!

personaly i think (along with most others) that the most important thing for an owb is that the fire shuts down tight from oxygen when its not calling for it and shavers dont and thats prolly one of the biggest reasons your burning to much wood. most furnaces come complete with a solenoid that opens and closes a rubber flap on your blower when it kicks on and off, that would be your first mod here is a link just to give you an idea

look at the laminated solenoid and the fan cover.

just about any stove will put out enough heat to heat your house, its just a matter of how often you fill the stove. Once a day is ideal i cold weather but 2 or more fills a day is just a pain. I would have to say that adding more water storage to the plan would help along with doubling the amount of insulation they say, i built my own boiler and it holds 200 gal of water and last week i even had snow on the roof of the boiler, i built a big cage around my boiler so i was able to insulate it real well, im very happy with my build its simple and works great.

i agree with yoder, i think its pretty ridiculous that they dont come with a solenoid, it is so important to shut your stove down tight. i think it would help sales if it came complete, besides not everyone is handy enough to install one on there own.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Indoor Wood Boiler- outside?
« on: September 26, 2010, 07:58:14 AM »
When i built my house in 2008 i wanted an owb but couldnt afford one at the time so i came across a indoor unit for free, it was hexagon style firebox with a water jacket sitting on top, I built a 4x4 insulated dog house over it and  actually worked pretty good i filled it morning and night. But since then i did some researching and built my own "real" OWB for 1500 bucks way nicer! If you aint going to have to much into it i would do it, the only thing is you might be filling it a few times a day depending on the size of the unit.
