General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Warm weather...

Expand your temp differential to like 20 degrees , it should make a longer hotter burn ad get rid of some of it for u

Also, don't put anymore wood in it than you have to have

So, if he expands the differential temp by 20*, does that mean once it reaches its designated shut off, that it will sit and idle until it reaches the 20* diff and fires back up?   ???    Seems one would want a shorter diff so that the fire doesn't sit and idle....this to me is what causes the creosote, but then again...I am still new at this wood burning stuff.   :bash:

Lug,
Do you have another heat source?  I would think we will have some cold night still to come.  I run mine til mid april.  I'm burnin very little wood and relighting is a pain, so I keep mine going.

tbone...I have my in house gas furnace.  It's been relatively warm here at night these last couple weeks...maybe down to 42.  I "thought" about keeping the fire going, but just like you...it's a pain in the butt to re-light....oh wait, you're talking about re-lighting it from the git-go...sorry.  Mine is a pain if when I get out there in the morning and I just have a few hot embers glowing.

The other reason I'd rather shut down now is because folks have their windows open and although my closest neighbor is about 3000' from me, I'd rather them not have to smell my OWF.

If the temps do drop once again to remind us that it is STILL winter, then I'll turn the power back on and fire her up.

Well I just shut off complete power to my unit.  I have a dual temp gauge in the basement attached to the in coming pex from the furnace and it's reading 88*.  there hasn't been a fire in the box since Monday night.  I see no sense in burning wood just because I can.  There's only two of us in this house and the only thing that would be heated would be the DHW, and I just feel that's a waste of good wood.  So we'll keep it shut down until the cold weather returns again in "maybe" two weeks...I dunno, but I do know what happened up here last April 1...we got cold and we got lots of snow!

Okay, now I'm getting confused.  I have the Shaver 250 and it has the corrosion inhibitor in.  Do I need to keep that thing heated up now or can I shut it down?  Granted we are going to get "some" cool nights, like last night it dipped down to the 40s.  If I top the tank off and the inhibitor is in the water, it should be fine correct?

I was just wondering about this very same subject this morning.  Given the warm temps are here early this year, wondering if I can go ahead and shut this thing down for the season.  Presently the pump is running along with the blower.  I have no switch to turn off only one but not the other.  The switch on the front of the unit shuts off the entire unit.

I know NOT to drain the water and I know about cleaning the inside of the unit and then spraying or wiping down with oil; and then of course running the pump once or twice a month to keep everything primed.

Just wondering if y'all think it's safe to shut down...I would think that the ground would be warm enough by now.

So is the Shaver company the ONLY culprit in claiming something they are not?  By the way, NOT all of us that have Shavers opted for the thicker firewall.  I went with the standard firewall thickness because if there is/was any kind of failure, it would fallback on their warranty...provided they would still be in business.

Guess it's time for me to compose the letter I've been meaning to send Mr. Billy Shaver.  I WANT to know exactly what is going on and I will c/c my letter to the BBB of Arkansas.

Hi guys,

I haven't  been on either of the two wood sites for quite some time...the hot rod has been taking preference :-)  Ya know, I have NO CLUE as to what a "gassification/gassifier" OWF is or does.  Really.  I keep reading about them on the forums and yet I sit and wonder just what the heck are these things?

Yes, I own a Shaver as y'all are aware of.   m I content and happy with my unit?  Well I was until recently when now I'm reading that they don't meet such and such standards if built after Aug 2011.  I have no clue as to what these standards are and if I have any recourse to go back to Shaver and demand a full refund etc.....I don't know which direction I would begin to take and what my complaints would be as this is the first OWF I have ever owned.  I bought this unit because of price and the fact that from doing my research prior to buying...just about every brand is similar in how these things are built.  They serve one purpose and that is to heat water and that water flows via a pump into the house/shop/whatever to a water-to-air exchanger and in the end heats our furnishings with wood instead of going broke paying the utility companies.

So here I am sitting wonder what to do with my Shaver.  I know I would prolly take a hit from two sources if I tried to sell it...one of those hits would be from my wife.  Then I'd be back in the same boat as to wondering what brand is better (and this raises numerous arguments) but will NOT send me to the poor house?

So who can give me the STRAIGHT skinnie on Shaver and what they're accused of and what can the typical Shaver owner do about any of this?  Oh, and what in the hell is a gassifier?  Back to my hot rod.

Well, I'd like to watch it with sound...have the volume turned up all the way on external speakers, but nothing coming out.  and I cannot read lips just yet.  So it goes the feds telling us how we are to run our lives.  Yep, Roger you are correct, these tree huggers can come up with all sorts of issues that strictly bother THEM, but they never offer any solutions.   Jerks.

Okay,

In "layman's"  terms what in the hell does all of this mean?  Explanation please "without" bashing the Shaver product.  We Shaver owners have to always put up with that kind of talk, so just lay it out plain and simple for me.  Thank you kindly.

Shaver Furnace / Re: rain cap
« on: February 10, 2012, 08:20:51 AM »
think stack is starting to plug up.had no problem with it last year. over summer added rain cap and ranco.now have a mess on the roof and plugging up. should i get rid of rain cap any ideals

I used to have the cap/arrestor.  My stack was doing the same as yours...filling up with creosote as was the expanded steel on the arrestor.  I removed the arrestor, took it and had it sand blasted, brought it back to the shop and cut away 3/4 of the expanded steel and put it back on the chimney.  My only reason for doing this was the hinder the sparks shooting out of the stack since the OWF is about 50' from the woods surrounding my house.

Presently I have the arrestor off the stack because the down draft also gets cut down having the arrestor on top of the stack.  I too put a bucket over the stack in the off season to prevent the rain from getting in the unit.

Watching mainly for the commercials...3rd quarter now and so far I think I may buy a Fiat....That one got my attention, wonder how much firewood you could fit in the trunk?  T & A advertising is such a wonderful tool in boosting morale and economy???  May be sign up for that Go Daddy stuff also...  Too much science fiction and rap crap though, thus far.  T & A sells better.

I'm sure your mileage may vary, but I assume not much....

Bill,

You ARE a funny guy.  LOL!  That Fiat commercial caught my eye as well, along with the commercial about better to give than to receive floral commercial.  So next week I'm off to GoDaddy.com buy a new Fiat and two dozen roses.  Now if only Danica Patrick will model the clothes that the babe in the Fiat commercial and floral commercial was wearing...we'll be good.  :-)

Game was certainly a nail biter.  I'm not a Giants fan nor a Patriots fan...but best to see someone put Brady in his place and what kind of wife is he married to that she gets in the players faces and yells that they didn't try to catch the balls he was throwing them?  What gall...yeah, I don't care if she is a super model.  You can tell who wears the jersey/spikes in that family.

Lugnut...a PROUD cheesehead and Green Bay Packers fan.

I posted a couple times on the new site this morning.  My concern is the color/size of the existing font.  The BLUE font/size that is used in the "subject" line is more user friendly, at least in my eyes.
