I'm I just a dinosaur?
« on: March 22, 2014, 05:54:12 PM »

I promised myself that I am going to finish cutting, spliting and stacking this spring all the logs left over.  There is about 1 1/2 tri axle loads left so I have been cutting alot. I have a 044 20" from the 90's I believe, and a MS 261 16" and a MS 460 24" within the last 2 years, I wanted to upgrade, so I thought.
Not taking anything away from the 2 MS's but I find myself going back to the 044 time after time, it just feels.... right.  Any thoughts, advise or experience, am I not crazy or just not willing to change.

I have an 028 and a little 011....I love them better than any new ms I've used.  Maybe it is a comfort thing.

It isn't just you.  The old ones run better all around. And they were made for comfortable handling.  I have two saws from the 80's and 90's, they outcut, outrun and vibrate less than my step dads brand new saws of the same size.  I have seen old saws from waaaaay back still running better than a newer regular guy saw.  I cannot speak for a commercial grade saw, as I have never used one new or old.  I think quality went down to sell more saws.  If you only need two saws your whole life and pass them on, no more business.  Make crap, better crap than your competitor, and sell saws forever.

My old boss said it best. "Anyone can overbuild, true engineering is making it just good enough."
