Shaver Furnace / Re: How'd your Shaver do this past winter??
« on: November 14, 2015, 12:52:51 PM »
Yep,just got mine back on after an outage to weld up seepage on the front, above the door on both sides of it.Insulation was soaked....Must of been oozing from day one, cause since the patch job and refill I haven't added any water at all. Shoulda took it apart 7 years ago...Hoping for no new leaks over the winter, probably gonna take it apart again next summer again.Keep my fingers crossed every trip out to it that the water level's still full...

Shaver Furnace / How'd your Shaver do this past winter??

Went thru 14 cords since Oct. '14 in the Shaver  165  here in SE PA...way cheaper than using the oil burner though.....kept 4000 sq ft toasty even on the -10 nights...with no issues or failures, just keep it stoked .... wondering how others who OWN & heat with a Shaver made out.....

Yeah I add water to my 165 every day or so....give 'er a drink every day or two.....been doin that since day one,March of 2008 and it's been burnin year 'round since then, never drained,no additives except the 1st or 2nd year.....One thing I did notice in 2013 when I took off the DHW coil cover to re-caulk it was where the 5" pipe comes up through,at the waterline it looked kinda rotted, wanted to check it out closer last summer (2014) but didn't get to it..maybe a hole there....made it through this winter but I think it needs to be addressed this summer though before it rots through at a bad time.....Maybe a condensate trap at the overflow/vent would eliminate water loss....Might hafta experiment a little....

Shaver Furnace / Re: Any coal burners?

The grate was warping some before the coal burning... This 165 has  been going  non-stop for almost 3 years now so I would expect some warping..I was putting coal in with the wood and that was working really good, just doing all coal now cause it's been tough to get out for the wood. Now I'm trying a stove/nut coal mix, and that seems easier to keep going  than all Stove coal...

Went to all coal....24 Hours between feedings seems to be working so far......Have to poke the ashes in the morning though, then poke it and add a couple shovels full in the evening.....Made a new grate out of re-bar too cause the original warped pretty bad and one of the bars burnt in half...Didn't cut enough wood again this year and coal's still half the cost of oil per BTU...and it smells better than oil

Since I did the blower flap modification recently I decided to try a little stove coal in the 165 again.......Works great.. I will be getting a couple tons delivered soon....Was almost impossible to burn the coal with the fixed shutter on the blower but now it's a pleasure....really helps the burn time when supplementing the oak,hickory,etc...still experimenting with it.Happy with the blower mod and it's effect on coal burning, thought I'd share the joy....

''I've never looked at a Shaver door''????  WOW....Mr. Yoderheating.... Well then how can you have any sort of intelligent  input on the topic  Mr. Heat Master Seller ??? If you've never looked at a Shaver door then you've obviously never seen a Shaver stove, huh?? But you seem to have a lot to say about them....Maybe not enough activity on the Heat Master pages?? A lot of rave reviews on the product  you're selling huh???? You comments on the Shaver stoves show you probably  know little firsthand of  what you're talking about with regards to their features, functions, reliability, shortcomings, performance,or anything about them.....

Second, a cheap $10.00 thermo disc for an aquastat is almost criminal.  They will inadvertently stick, causing extreme temperatures and severe water loss.
The only way this stove works, is if you run your pump 24/7 to keep the water circulated and in turn waste wood.
Hmmmm, the cheap "criminal" therm-o-disc on my 165 has been doing OK for almost 3 years non-stop..the 2 spares I got just in case are only collecting dust on the shelf so far.And I don't run the pump 24/7 and the stove works fine, so that is an inaccurate statement...This farmers 4500 sq. ft. shack has been kept nice and warm and had plenty of hot water year round with a 165 shaver whose only modification was to thread the overflow nipple and attach a 1/2" tee with a thermometer in the run of it...and since it paid for itself this summer in heating oil savings I like my shaver alot...Basic design is what I would build myself if I had the time..and it is a very basic design that works as is... But I did pick up a solenoid at Grainger today and i'm gonna do a powerflap on the blower, think it is a good improvement worth doing. My 2cents..............

Shaver Furnace / Any Satisified Shaver Owners ??
« on: December 05, 2009, 04:55:40 PM »
We ordered our Shaver 165 in November of '07 , and had it running in March of '08..Besides extending the chimney 6 feet ( $25.00) and putting a tee and thermometer on the overflow ($5.00) it is all stock...including the Therm-o-Disc thermostat....And we use it year round for our DHW in the summer...August next year it will have paid for itself..We're happy with ours but seems a lot of folks aren't happy with their Shaver..anybody else have a problem-free Shaver ??Just wondering.....
