General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Running the pump while away
« on: December 11, 2017, 08:38:05 PM »
I only have the Central Boiler chemicals in it which I think are for ph.  Guess I'll leave it running. Last year the electric bill stayed the same as if I was here.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Running the pump while away
« on: December 11, 2017, 06:28:25 PM »
After Xmas I'm going to Fla. for 3 months. Last year I left the pump running and switched over to Heat Pump and set the Thermostat @ 50.  I ws thinking about shutting the pump down this year when I switch to HP.  Should I worry about freezing?  The HP is heating the boiler water before the house since the exchange is on top of the furnace.  What do you folks think?

I never thought of that. I wonder how much more water it would hold??  Might require more additive.

I'm sorry, I really misspoke. I meant to say water level.  In the sight tube it fluctuates above the normal line and then halfway to the normal line when the temp is between 165-175.

I neglected to say that temp range is 165-175.  I can't see any pattern to the temp and water level.  I don't think that temp range would affect the water level. It never has before.

I have a CB 5036 and this winter the water temp is all over the place. One time it will be high. Next time it will be low.  Sometimes it is at normal.  Anybody know what would cause this??

Nice set-up. I would strongly recommend getting the cap for your flue. I went without one for several yrs. but when a neighbor who installed their CB the same year as I did, had his elbow rust out and the flue started collapsing.  I put one on mine and really like it. Keeps everything out and keeps the wind from pushing back on the draft.
I bet it's real warm in the top of that dome. ;)

Are you guys saying drain it and put 200 gal of RV antifreeze in it. The pumps are hot when running so if I put some insulation over them, I'm thinking they will be ok.  They are on the boiler and the interior piping and heat exchangers are in a under ground basement.

I'll be leaving home and CB 5036 for Jan.-Mar.  I plan on leaving the heat pump on set about 50. Should I leave the pumps running even though the fire will burn out? Leaning toward leaving them on.

Thanks all.  I sprayed everything down with silicone spray and now all is quiet.

Yes it is the solenoid and it has never buzzed.  It was so loud that you could plainly hear it from over 100'.  Just wondered if it was going bad.

Central Boiler / Damper door motor buzzing

Went out Sat am and the damper motor was buzzing loudly when the damper was open. Took the cover off and lubed it but it closed and hasn't opened all weekend when I was around.  Anybody have this happen? What was the remedy?

I can tell you from experience that Central Boiler has no customer service in reality. They don't even support their dealers. Their 25 yr written warranty means nothing. My 5036 had a leak from the factory that was under the foam.  At the start of it's 2nd winter it started leaking externally.  It had corroded the steel all the way through the back of the boiler. CB wanted to pick up the boiler whenever their truck got to my area, take it back to the factory and charge me for labor and return freight.  They would have supplied a piece of steel.  I would have gone the winter without the boiler in addition to tearing down a shed I had built over it. My dealer arranged for a welder to come out and repair it.  I ordered some spray foam(expensive) and re-foamed it and the dealer helped me put it back together.  They didn't give the dealer anything. To me that's not really a warranty, they just supply materials.

Central Boiler / Re: 5036 Model; regarding ash.
« on: January 03, 2015, 07:15:31 PM »
Everytime I load it, I rake the coals and ashes around.  It seems to allow more coals to burn down to ash. You will find that your ash level goes down by doing this.  I've only cleaned out mine twice this season. Had a couple of warmer days about a month apart so I let it burn down, move some coals aside and empty it into a metal wheelbarrow. I keep it in the wheelbarrow for at least a week, stirring the ashes every day. You would be surprised how long that ash stays warm. There's always some small coals in the bottom that need to be brought to the surface so they can burn. The level in the wheel b will go down over the week.
