General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / water tank size question
« on: June 10, 2011, 03:59:37 PM »
I am wieghing two systems right now.  One from Aquatherm with a closed system and 76gallons and one from Earthoutdoor with an open system and 350 gallons.  I have an indoor pool which will put a very long duty cycle load on the system as I expect it to run 6-8hrs a day with a load of around 100K BTUs.  Both units are around 350K BTUs.  I also have 3 zones in my house that will be heated with this as well as my hot water.  I am concerned that the small gallon unit will not be able to handle the peak loads well and will have issues.  Any thoughts?  All combined I probably have 500K BTU if everything turns on at once.  I would expect the heating systems should have short on times so hopfully that doesn't happen often and the overlap is short duration.

The cleanout door and grates seem important to me.  Any suggestions here?  Should I forgo a little water and burning chamber size for these?  Teh difference seems pretty minimal.  Or should I go ahaed with the large size.  Any thoughts?

I have the mtn. man 500 which is about the same as the 505 except I have a door and grates for the ashes.  I purchased my unit at the end of last year and went through most of the winter with it.  As far as heating it worked fine for me.  This is my first OWF so I really don't know how it compares to the others.  I think the idea of getting a bigger one is a good idea.  I'm glad I did.  I would rather have overcapacity than under.  On these spring days when it can be warm in the day and cold at night I fixed a remote to manually turn off the pump from inside the house and the unit will just idle most of the day not burning hardly any wood.

Thanks a ton.  I assume they are recommending this one for the larger capacity, although I wonder about not having the grates and the cleanout.  Did you install your or have it installed.  It sounds like they just drop it off?  I have a lot of experience with plumbing and general construction so I assume it is not all that difficult.

Is this an enclosed pool?  The amount of heat to heat pool water is huge as I am findoing out right now.  I just installed a 25K gal pool, but it is enclosed.  I heat the room to 85ish which helps a ton.  Still, the ground is 55F and it has a lot more surface area with the pool.  I estimate the heat loss to the ground on the order of 500K BTUs per day.  I am in the market for one of these furnaces to take over for my propane heater which is costing me a fortune.
