Central Boiler / How old is your Classic
« on: March 06, 2013, 04:08:22 PM »
Regarding the ages of your Central Boiler Classic (conventional) models, I am on year 7 and was wondering how long these stoves will last with proper maintenance and care (water testing, cleaning firebox/oil in off season, rain cap etc.)
I have not had to replace anything other than the front door which cracked for some reason, but that was covered under the warranty.

Central Boiler / Door frame on CB 4030
« on: March 06, 2013, 04:00:57 PM »
Hello fellow central boiler owners. I was wondering if anyone has a 7+ year old Central Boiler 4030, I have one and i am on my 7th season i have noticed that the bottom lip of the door frame (collar) where the door gasket presses against to make a seal is noticeably thinner that the top and sides, i suspect it has corroded or worn thin over the years.

Is this a part that would be under warranty?

Is this an easy fix to weld a new piece of steel if it does wear through?

I hope my ash pan is not getting thinner as well, it appears the be in great shape i scrape the pan down every week or two and inspect for corrosion as well as you can in the heating season, no signs so far.

Equipment / 20" bar of stihl ms028
« on: February 28, 2012, 05:12:08 AM »
I have a ms028 that i use to cut firewood with about 15 cords a year. Clear brush etc. It cuts great with the 16inch bar but when i get into larger pieces and trees it really slows down. I see i can put a 20" bar and chain on. Would this be worth the price?

Central Boiler / Timer on pump
« on: February 28, 2012, 05:01:36 AM »
I am taking care of a eclassic 1400 while the owners are away for the month. They have a propane furnace to heat the house and at first we would run the pump on 1400 24/7 but the propane furnace was going through way too much propane. So we put a simple analog timer to just run the pump on the 1400 for a half hour each day and that keeps the eclassic boiler at 60f to 80f by the time the pump turns back on 24 hours later. This method cut way back on the propane usage, but was wondering if there was a better way to keep the eclassic from freezing other than glycol.

Plumbing / Taco pumps
« on: January 24, 2012, 03:37:02 PM »
I recently did a flow rate head calculation using tacos td10 "selecting circulators" document. I have roughly 27ft of head and need a flow rate of 6gpm for my system. I currently have a 009 pump and a spare cartridge. It looks like i am getting 3gpm with the 009 from the pump curve and i would get 5 gpm from the 0011. Would the 0011 be worth the upgrade? I am getting roughly 20 to 25 degrees of drop on my return line to the owb.

Central Boiler / Water change
« on: January 22, 2012, 10:41:30 AM »
I have been running my 4030 classic for 6 years & have always checked the water level and have only added a few gallons over this time at the most. I also check the nitrite and ph levels quarterly.  Its always a little over the 30 drops they reccomend. Is this a problem? Also i have never changed my water in the boiler but i was reading my owners manual and it says to change it every 3 years but my dealer said as long as the water still tests out ok not to change it? I have also pulled a few quarts off the drain valve in the summer when it has been shut down for a few weeks and its always clear of any sediment so i pour it back in through the vent pipe.

Central Boiler / Taco wb 2400 or 0013 pump?
« on: January 22, 2012, 07:22:08 AM »
I recently did some head calculations and flow rates for my system and i have 30ft of head and need 6 to 8 gpm for my system. I have 100ft of 3/4 copper baseboards and calculated for my elbows 220ft of 1" pex  a heat echanger for dhw and a zone valve. All these pipes and 65000 btu  put me at these figures. I currently use a taco 009 and i calculated its only pumping 2 or 3 gpm. Would the 0013 or  wb2400 be a better choice? My return temp is 20 to 25 less than supply right now and would like to get that to 10 or 15. Possibly reducing wood consumption.
