Equipment / Re: Log splitter problem

It does have a filter, it's on the return side of the valve body. I changed it when I had the cylinder repacked. Is it worth changing again? I believe I'm going to go ahead and order the seals for the pump.

I completely drained all fluids out of tank, cylinder and filter. I refilled and it was still having the same problem. After about 10 minutes of run time it would start to come out the breather.

Equipment / Log splitter problem
« on: March 14, 2014, 09:55:08 AM »
I have an older Northern Tool brand splitter that has the 2 stage pump, I think it is a 11 gpm. About a month ago, the cylinder started to jerk. I thought the seals in the cylinder was going bad so, I replaced them. Sure enough it fixed the problem. Monday, I moved the splitter to another location (about 3 miles) and when I cranked it up, the clyinder started to jerk again.

It has a clear discharge hose and it looks like it has air in the fluid. Also, fluid/air is coming out of the breather cap. I thought I may have cracked the cheap plastic fittings and this was allowing the pump to suck air. I replaced with all new metal fittings, hydraulic fluid, cranked and still the same problem.

I noticed that a small amount of fluid is coming out of the pump shaft. Could it be sucking in air there? If so, can I replace those seals or will it force me to buy another pump?

Thanks in Advance

Equipment / Re: M105 Military Trailer for firewood

I plan on buying a deuce in the near future. I could not turn the price down for the 105. I have been looking for the 101 but can't find any that are close to me. I'll just keep on looking and hopefully I'll find one soon. That is a good idea of installing an axle with electric brakes and smaller diameter wheels. I had a friend come across some wheels that would interchange with the lug pattern of the 105. He installed the wheels and put some lower profile tires on them and lowered the trailer a good bit.

Hopefully, I'll put some welding and fabricating skills together and modify the trailer for my use.

I've got a 3/4 ton Chevy and a 1/2 ton Chevy. It may be to much for the 1/2 ton. It has air brakes and I've read if you take the air equipment off you'll shed about 300lbs. Also looking to install some lower profile tires to bring the height down.

These furnaces are becoming popular in my area (upstate SC). There is a dealer not far from me and he says that he has sold about 15 units in the past year.

I built my door the same size as my firebox, 28x36. I have about 3" of refractory inside the door. I built the entire door out of 3/8 plate. I had to use my tractor to hang it on the furnace  :bash:. It was a pain to install but, it has not warped yet. I've been heating for 5 years now.

What's y'all's opinion on pulling this for firewood? I know I'll have to extend my pintle up for the tall tongue of the trailer. I found this trailer on CL for $350.

I did not make a grate either. I just shovel out the edges of the firebox once a week. I might get a wheelbarrow full every two months. Great looking boiler!
