Some sad news in a nearby county.  A 47 year old veterinarian died from injuries in an outdoor furnace explosion on his property.  He seemed to be very involved in his community.

No details were given on what the explosion was about.  I may make a call to get more info.  Are any types of furnaces capable of that?

Fire Wood / Scored bunch of wood from tree service
« on: December 23, 2017, 04:18:01 PM »
Guy I know has a tree cutting service. Had a job on the Indiana University campus, and offered free wood.

I got two car trailer loads of logs, and his crew loaded my pickup bed with rounds each time.  Mix of cherry, ash (of course) and maple.  Cut the logs down to length and rolled them off the trailer.

Plenty more i could have gotten, but I was  tuckered out.

Got my big Husqv to going and spent the day cutting up tornado downed tree tops on the farm.  Lots of splitting in my future.   Wiil be my first attempt at a Holsen Haus.  The things that amuse some people!

Have a nice fire going and sipping on 12 year old VanWinkle- well deserved...

General Discussion / Tornado touch down near the farm
« on: November 06, 2017, 05:20:52 PM »
Yesterday afternoon the worse storm yet to hit the farm happened, according to my 87 year old neighbor.

Pretty sure it was a tornado- photo was taken of a funnel cloud just before super high winds, rain and hail hit.

Very little damage in my County, but a couple mikes away, across the line, several homes damage or destroyed. Big trees knocked down at the root ball.

No injuries reported, thank goodness.

Only issue at my place was the cover to my wood stack was blown off and the next-in-line wood to burn is soaked. Power was off until this morning. The linemen came in force before nightfall and got to work as good men will.

I had an garage heater intalled last week and got my boiler going.

Downstairs heat is fine, and the garage heater is hot on entry and exit pipe.  Directly inline with upstairs, but it isnt getting the water up to it.   I know some water drained out when the lines were cut for the hook up, but since the heater seems to be ciculatiing? Am at a loss.

Fire Wood / Share your snake story!
« on: September 22, 2017, 12:54:50 PM »
Messing with the woodpiles in warm weather is something I avoid, until the copperheads are more sluggish. I am not afraid of snakes, but each piece of wood I move, I look for one of those critters. Figure complacency will get me.

Anyone have a fun snake tale from cutting or wood handling?  So far I don't but I bet there are some good stories.

Fire Wood / Had a triaxle load of wood delivered. Now have a cushion.
« on: September 13, 2017, 08:43:50 AM »
I stopped by an Amish mill that advertised slab wood for sale. All of it is remnants of their milling. Non pieces were very big, and some were mostly bark.  20 bucks for an 8 foot truck bed. I got two loads , but spent time picking though it to find seasoned and pieces that were larger.   Not bad for fireplace and the top off the boiler.

My neighbor mentioned an ad in the paper for triaxle load of oak- about 5 cords a load. Had some delivered, and pretty happy with what I have. nearly all of it is bark free. End rounds and odds and ends of various sizes of oak and hickory.  Some of it is green and some is seasoned a little.   It was nice to just go out with the splitter and work through it, without having to cut up a trunk first.  It will certainly give me the cushion of wood, while I head into the woods and attack the blow downs that need attention.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Teens shamed into cutting wood
« on: February 11, 2017, 07:49:49 PM »
I was cutting some utility company tree work at an older neighbor's house last week. Got in a conversation with another neighbor who bought land next to it and was clearing trees,

I mentioned seeing a truck loaded with cut wood there testerday.  He said it was a couple high school kids who live nearby . They spend their time just driving around- we are pretty far out by local standards.

He got on them saying your dad has an outdoor furnace. Take a couple truck loads of this wood home, he feeds you and everything.   They made excuses for a couple days, then I guess the shame of cruising by folks working got to them.

Hope dad was pleased. I know an unexpected labor free truck load of wood would make me happy.

Fire Wood / Owners of large tracts both timber cutting
« on: January 30, 2017, 09:34:03 PM »
Found out that the owners on both sides of me are harvesting this year. One needed clarification from the County that the unmaintained section of road wasnt owned by me. Logger needs access.

I gave no fuss as it is a section road and I know the law here- just because the County doesnt maintain it, doesnt mean they gave up ownership.   Going to have a happy logging company and absentee landowner. Will be pretty easy to get permission to cut up some quality firewood tree tops.

The other land, i already cut blow downs and easy stuff.  Think the three year plan is under way. Will likely do some woodpiles in place and collect as I need. I minimize how many times i move the same stick, as much as posssible.

Fire Wood / Anyone heard the term "shook rick"?
« on: January 07, 2017, 11:15:33 PM »
My wise Quaker great uncle is was an author.  He wrote a book about settling in to a nearby County decades before it became what is best described as Indiana's Vermont- the county that people flock toin the Fall. Became an artist colony and intellectual retirement area as well.

In the forties, he and my aunt lived year round in a large military tent as they built their home. He wrote about a time he had a local deliver a rick of firewood. After he stacked it he thought it was a little light on dimension. He contacted the guy and said he understood a rick to be measured by those dimensions. The guy replied " oh, you're talkoing about a shook rick. That's extra if you want a shook rick"

I presume the meaning is similar to when you fill a bag or box with stuff and give it a shake it get some more stuff in.

Ol' Hank found that so amusing, he named his ad hoc publishing company "Shook Rick Press"    Not sure if he did business with him again, and he became more astute that over the decades he was the very fabric and history of the County.

Is a shook rick anything you all have heard of?

We live pretty far away from any town (by local standards) so we invited neighbors who, like us generally have a quiet New Year eve.

I decided to get the fireplace going for the first time in forever, and it not only made a nice touch, provieded some nice warmth. Wife and I decided we will enjoy it on weekends.

Ebbie my wood cutting partner found a new spot to hang out.  She does a great job of fending off fox squirrels and chipmunks while I am occupied with equipment. She has a 100% success rate.

My wife just had to go out of the country to "recharge her batteries" which comes from the high stress tasks of working at a not for profit- don't get me started.

I decided to shut of the boiler, only to be delayed 36 hours getting back when the coldest days I a frozen line- no circulation. trying to track down where it could be. the lines are exposed in the garage (unheated) as they are routed to the upstairs furnace. Been blasting it with a propane powered heater. No luck.

In checking some paint and varnish containers in the garage there is no indication they had frozen, so not sure if that is where my problem is.

Found my water pump was hot to the touch, after running for hours with no circulation and the boiler temp rising to 194.

Next step is to get into the crawl space and see if that is the problem. I am pretty confident the lines from the unit to the house were put in below frost line.

Are there any common areas along the units when they aren't running and a line freeze happens. I also took the propane unit out and blasted the plumbing at the OWB too.

my simple joy in life is having my OWB going on frigid days and enjoying a cheaply warmed house. I am a treat to live with right now. Hope she thought it was worth it.  Stayed tuned to my next rant about United Airlines treating passengers like crap.

Fire Wood / Anyone become a "wood slave"?
« on: December 02, 2016, 06:55:39 PM »
When I first got my furnace , I posted on my car website, asking if anyone else used an owb. Typical replies about wasting time and work. One guy used the term wood slave, being obsessed with fallen trees, and throughout the year looking for and cutting etc. he knew a guy who was always making it a priority, always begging off other activities and obliging his children to help him. The kids moved out as soon as they were able.
Anyone feel they have too much fun messing in the woods, cutting, stacking, burning ? I only look for wood around the property which needs cut anyhow.  Found a tree across a logging road tonight.  Going to gobble  it up first thing in the morning.   I find every good productive hour equals a week of burning.

General Discussion / Freshening up the place in the woods for the season
« on: February 24, 2016, 04:51:22 PM »
Taking advantage of the warm spell to lighten up the living room of the cabin.  New paint, and out goes 55 year old carpet, and new laminated flooring.

The cold front will delay things a bit, but by early Spring it should be great.

General Discussion / Ever have this happen?
« on: February 03, 2016, 07:44:46 PM »
Almost got in big trouble today. I was in WalMart, checking out.  The cashier said "strip down, facing me".

I was down to my boxers before realizing she was talking about my credit card.
