Plumbing / Re: Installed new Plate exchanger and have questions
« on: October 09, 2012, 09:17:49 AM »
If there is no hot water being used, the water in the tank will cool. Then you have to push the water heated from the exc. thru the dip tube and thru the cooled water in the tank. If there is no recirculation keeping the water in the tank hot, you may as well put the exchanger above the hot outlet, and use it as an instantaneous heater....

I have a y strainer that I clean out periodically. Don't forget valves on both sides, if you put in a filter or strainer, or both.

If you don't have a recirc. line, you won't be storing any hot water in the tank, the way you have it piped. Also, like the other guys said it looks like the exc. is piped incorrectly too.

nice job, where did you get the design ?   i'm a welder /fabricator / millwright also.

Thanks. I kind of borrowed ideas from several stoves. Then I kind of winged it...

If/when i were to do another one, I would change a lot of things....I won't go into that now, but I learned a lot reading this forum...

Using pipe instead of plate would have saved so much time and work, but live and learn...

Year 2 going great so far....Didn't run it long enough at the end of last winter to know for sure....

This Spring/Summer, I will be adding a domestic recirc line, and piping a HX into the air handler for my upstairs bonus room(800 sq. ft.)...

Rome wasn't built in a day.... ;D

Shaver Furnace / Re: Wiring a 165
« on: December 16, 2011, 04:29:02 PM »
I got both of my aquastats from Grainger. Less than 100$ each...

One is installed on the back of the boiler in a well which reads temp in the water at the stove. When the water temp drops below set point, the a-stat turns on the blower to feed air to the fire....

My other stat is a surface mount, on my supply pipe before it goes into the first heat exchanger. It is wired into my indoor air handler(furnace). The yellow wire from my main thermostat is tied to the a-stat.

When the water temp drops below set point, the yellow is made, and the outdoor unit kicks on...

If you have a heat pump I don't think you need that second thermostat. You need a setup like mine, a AQUASTAT.

See the little gray box on my HX? (hope this works)

http://outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com/forum/index.php?action=media;sa=media;in=30

That's the aquastat. It's like a on/off switch for the heat pump only. If thermostat calls for heat the aquastat determines if just the fan or the heat pump/fan should come on. That's determined by the set point of the aquastat. (mine is set for OWB temp of 160*)

Unfortunately, I don't know what terminals they connected it to inside the air handler.EDIT: I don't think this arrangement works on variable speed systems!!!!!  (mine isn't variable speed)

I'm pretty sure it's the yellow wire that you break with the aquastat....

Mine's hooked up like Ridgekid.

I have an aquastat connected to the supply and if the temp drops below +or-140 it kicks the outdoor unit on...

I believe the yellow wire is the one that's made by the A-stat to send a signal to the outdoor unit...Simple but effective.

Original thermosatat controls everything.
