Title: New member registration
Post by: mlappin on January 10, 2016, 09:37:44 PM
To all new members registering, please include your brand and model, I’ll check members awaiting activation several times a week and if I see a brand and model in the profile I’ll go ahead and manually activate your account.

If you’re researching different brands then use “looking” or “researching” for the brand and I’ll activate your account.

Be sure to check back often, more than likely you won’t get the email saying your account has been activated.

That would seem to be a great way to weed out the yahoo's

I know that you are the moderator on the OWF site. I misspelled my name on my profile and it wont let me change it. Can you help me. My Username should be Bluegrass Wood Burner, It is listed Bluegrass Woodnburner. I must have not had my glasses on that day.

I tried as well, it claims Bluegrass Wood Burner is already taken.

I believe your account is one of the ones I manually activated, could you check your spam or junk folder in your email provider and  see if a email ever showed up from this site?

I’m guessing web based emails are automatically dumping the activation emails from this site into the spam or junk folder as they would contain a link back to this site.

I don’t have high enough permissions in the software to actually delete accounts, I’ll see if I can change it and keep it all in lower case.

If I had permission to delete accounts there would be 261 pages of members awaiting activation that far as I can tell are ALL spammers. When the username is “sdgzqtqw4t” and the email is hruzvut783z@gmail.com, obvious spammer.

It was 286 pages of people awaiting activation, I went thru over several nights and weeded the obvious good emails and usernames out of 286 pages then if they listed an actual brand and model of OWB I went ahead and activated them even though page 286 had people who applied in 2014.

I think I’ve figured out a way to fix this, if later you notice your username is what you want then it worked  ;)

I went thru all 286 pages of members awaiting activation and that’s how I decided on which legitimate members to activate. Some of those member names that looked like a 2 year old beat on the keyboard I skipped. I mean those whose username is qwdfh768 was obviously a spammer.

Managed to whittle 286 pages down to 281 pages after activating those with a brand and model in their profile. Came up 5 short of getting it down to 280 pages.

I had to wait about4 weeks to be approved and I use outlook.  I have a sight called "Kawasakitrax", we are collecting, fixing and riding Kawasaki snowmobiles.  When I do the approving of new members I copy and paste the IP address into the google search bar.  If that IP is being used for spam it will show in the search result.  If they only have a couple spambots I just delete it.  If they have many I ban that IP address.  So far it has worked well at keeping the bad guys out.  When I signed up here I expected my first post to be something else.

If you use that service how did you get over 280 pages of people waiting for approval?  I have looked into stopforumspam but still choose to take care of approvals myself.  I get about 10 a week so it is a small number, it seems about half are spammers trying to get in.

Good luck

I’m just that good ;)

Actually I just scrolled thru page after page checking usernames and email accounts, the legit looking ones I then opened in a new tab and checked to see if they listed a brand and model on their app, if they did I then checked the IP’s. If all was good from there I approved them and sent an email. If the username/email looked like a hyperactive 5 year old on crack just beat on the keyboard to make a name/email up I skipped em altogether.

Another way is I used the “check for Duplicates” function, one user might have up to 500 usernames all tied to the same IP or email. Would have liked to have high enough access to just delete all of those.
