Fire Wood / Re: wood drying time

Hey,

I'd like to know how to tell by looking at the wood just how seasoned it is!

This would be very useful for me.

I know this will vary by species, but can't you tell by the size of the cracks on the end?

Is there a table somewhere breaking it down by species, length & diameter of log and crack size?

For instance, if I had a four foot long piece of red maple, 6" in diameter, with max crack size of 1/16", how seasoned would that be?

Anybody know if I could get my hands on information like this?

I load 44" diameter X 27" high X 40" long (on average), twice daily!

This equates to approx 19 cf per load or roughly 40 cf per day.

Therefore, one cord of wood (128 cf) will last 3.2 days. Let's just say I burn 2 cords per week for most of the heating season.

     Nov 1.0 cord/wk =  4 cords
     Dec 1.5 cord/wk =  7 cords
     Jan  2.0 cord/wk =  8 cords
     Feb 2.0 cord/wk =  8 cords
     Mar 1.5 cord/wk =  7 cords
     Apr  1.0 cord/wk =  4 cords
            Total               38 cords?? :bag:

I burn mostly poorly seasoned (50% green) medium quality (thinnings, dead-wood, blow-down, waste) softwood (spruce, fir ).   :-\

When well below freezing I mix in varying amounts of seasoned hardwood (yellow birch, red maple).

Well,

Are you sure there is no blockage?  ::)

Can you test your new heat exchanger to ensure there is no flow restriction?   :bash:

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Need Help, which to buy
« on: February 02, 2009, 12:49:42 PM »
I think that it pretty obvious what I have to say if you read some of my other posts!

Stay away from Wood Doctor especially it they are trying to sell you a Stainless Steel OWB actually made by Global Hydronics but sold as a fully warrantied Wood Doctor product!  ::)

I am being told my entire 2000 lbs furnace is "a part" that I must ship to the factory half way across the country for repairs should it develope a leak!!  :'(

This could cost me around $4000, half what I paid for the furnace in the first place!!  :bag:

What kind of warranty is that!!  ???

I have had no communications to this effect and I am required by Wood Doctor to use their boiler treatment as per my warranty!  :bag:

My furnace water is checked monthly by myself using the directions provided by Wood Doctor.  I also have my furnace well grounded and an anode installed in it for further protection.  Although, I installed the anode with the intension of protecting my black iron piping as I have been informed that black iron acts as an anode for stainless steel and should have already been protecting it from corrosion, what little if any might be occuring!!!

My original purchase was a Wood Doctor with Wood Doctor colors and logos, but it is listed in my documentation as a model GH1400SS!

I didn't think at the time that the GH meant anything in particular as I didn't even know Global Hydronics existed until my first replacement furnace showed up!

Plumbing / Re: Home-made Hot Water Tank Tube Heat Syphon
« on: January 30, 2009, 08:30:00 AM »
I don't understand?  ???

It is working the way I have it now.

When cold surges up my inner 3/4 tube it hits the valve and the valve shuts down preventing the cold water from going through and over to the top of my hot water tank and mixing with the hot water leaving the top of the tank.  :photo:

So all is well the way I have it.  ;D

I'm gonne put another post up showing how I piped the back of my Wood Doctor so that I could insert a standard size hot water tank anode!

Watch for it!

It is hard to figure isn't it?  ???

It's a lot lot more than you could ever imagine though, isn't it!  :o

I figure (and I'm burning mostly fall down and thinings, softwood - spruce & fir), 1 cord every 8 days!!  :bash:

Thank God it's not costing me anything, that's all I can say!

How many of us ever got a straight answer on this when we were buying our OWB?  ::)

It's alot of work, but it pays well for an extra job and good for the tree lot, so I carry on!!

I don't know why I have the furnace I have now? ???
It's green and it has Global Hydronics logos?

Wood Doctor delivered it to me as a replacement for my original furnace of which I can not remember the color now, but it definitely had Wood Doctor logos all over it.

I can only guess that at the time I bought my original Wood Doctor, Wood Doctor was actually selling Global Hydronics units repackaged as the Wood Doctor product.  I really don't know if they are still doing this.

I just assumed at the time that they were just to busy to repackage my replacement unit and just delivered it as is!

It makes no difference to me, because I bought a Wood Doctor product and I have a Wood Doctor warranty!

Both furnaces have developed either cracks in the welds or perforations through the Stainless Steel plate or both.  The first within two heating seasons and the second within three!

So I am still within the first 5 years of my warranty and entitled to 100% coverage!

I believe I have put up my Wood Doctor warranty in another post and hope you will fine it.
