Sounds like they should have had em all sand or bead blasted before starting to assemble the firebox. But….I have a five hundred gallon LP tank I use for waste oil storage, I still haven’t got all the paint off with a big right angle grinder and a knotted wire brush, hard to believe it’d come off on its own, but some paint can’t take emersion either.

Probably was painted by home owner maybe at one point in time
