Plumbing / Re: Heat exchanger in attic
« on: January 09, 2012, 09:31:35 AM »
My second exhanger is in my attic, one story house so closer to boiler level than you.  My pump runs 24 x 7 and I have maid-o-mist a the highest point in the attic to bleed any air out...no issues been running for six months.

MTJag,

I say insulate the heck out of everything. My 50 plate is wrapped in duck insulation and then I stuffed fiberglass all around it, it's in my crawl space.  My line set in the house I used the 1" fiberglass insulation. from Mansfield, the boiler line kind.  All that hard work I put into the systems and the firewood - I want the heat to go where I need it to go - DHW and my water to air heat exchangers in my plenums.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: how much heat loss
« on: January 02, 2012, 11:59:45 AM »
I'm in Southern NJ my boiler is about 80' ft. from my house. I have a temp probe at the boiler (dry well) and strap on probes on the line set in the crawl.  I used thermopex insulated pipe, from central boiler dealer here in Jersey - $10.50 a lin.ft.  Here are my readings and basic setup:

80' from house to boiler - water 185 at boiler.
Thru the foundation probe strapped to copper supply - water 184.
Return side at the foundation probe strapped to copper supply  - water 177.

Pump runs 24/7

50 plate DHW plate exchanger downstream of the water heater
16 x 24 water to air exchanger zone one
14 x 22 water to air exchanger zone two
Roughly 250' of copper 1' makes my single loop in the crawl.  I insulated my lines in the crawl with the 1” fiberglass with the plastic corners like you see on industrial steam lines.  Figured the money spent for the system, no reason to skimp on keeping the heat where I want it.

When I'm calling for heat and using hot water I see a 20-30 degree drop on the return side...system works perfect for me.  Always warm in the house, 4000 sq. foot rancher with 14 foot ceilings and never run out of hot water (three women in the house

Problem SOLVED]Well Ridgekid - the Filtrete 30 50 does the trick!!  It will work for almost any configuration I can think of using one of our wood boilers.  The key is the differential setting that is configurable on the 30 50 between two heat sources.  The honeywells wait like 4 min then kick the secondary heat source in to play, not what we want.  I was able to set a 10 degree delta between the boiler and my natural gas furnace burner coming on.  It works like a charm!!! And the darn thing is wireless with applications to mange it remotely!!!!  Here is how its wired for my configuration:

C - common hot to run the Wi-Fi
G - Open
Y - Yellow
W - Green (fan)
R- Red
W2 - White

So when Heat is called for just my forced air fan comes on (W), if the boiler is out of wood or the pump dies and the thermostat sees a 10 degree temperature drop the secondary (w2) comes on.  I may shorten the delta so the house doesn't get so cold if there is a problem, but right now I just do not want to use any natural gas!! The free software even has detailed logging to dial you system in.. an example below.  Thanks for all that provided input - I appreciate it.  If you have any questions, 'll do my best to help you out but this thermostat does the trick!! ;D

Done...

No I have not soled this one.  just a reminder - no heat pump in my system.  Just a propane furnace that I'm trying to keep only as a backup.  The Tekmar seem to be where I need to go - they are pricy.  Right now I'm using two thermos and it is working fine....just looks like crap.

This seems too easy!! We just need a programmable thermo with 2 stages of heat that has adjustable set points....

No dout about our country thse days - we are turning in to a bunch of overweight lazy bums in my mind :bag:.  I got the same reaction when I told a few of my co-workers about my OWB - I work in computers and almost all of my fellow geeks haven't slighest idea what the working end of a hammer is!  I've been burning wood since I was old enough to carry it into the house - 30 plus years.  I love the work and the satisfaction of my stacked wood - it truly is money in the bank.  Like most of my fellow posters I'm dissapointed on where we are heading these days in the US...Most of the conuntry needs a dose of reality.  After starting out as an elctrician I never complain about woking in the computer room, it's always 68 and never rains!!

Gotta run - have a few wheelbarles to split befor the sun goes down... Happy veterans' day to all my fellow vets!

Might be a dumb question but; how do you clear an air lock from a plate exchanger?

Ohio,

You need the pump to continusiouly run to provide hot water from the plate set up.  A side arm will work off off convection and naturally move the hot water up.

Dirty,

My 50 plate is after my water tank and works fine.  I have 1 1/4 horse sumbersable pump that moves my 55 degree well water...Water is hot - but not so bad I worry about my kids getting scalled, they are older and know better - so no mixing valve.  If I were doing this for others I would most likely go the Yoder route.  Safer as the tank is a big fat hariy mixing valve.....

n D....I re-read your post and this is exactly what I'm dealing with on EVERY Honeywell I've tried.  The techs at Honeywell said it's not configurable on any of their models.  So I'm looking at another brand venstar they seem to have what I need - just double checking with their technical support.  I'm all about simple - this damn problem is simple - it's finding the solution that is a pain in the a@s.

Thanks for the replies - suggestions appreciated keep em coming.....yes I know two thermos makes this go away
