Big,

I think most of us here are with you.  If I hadn't caught my Royal from a guy going out of business I would still be on the hunt for the "perfect" OWB.  Bottom line I'm tired of dragging wood into the house and babysitting my cute little Vermont castings POS stoves....anything is better than loading those damn baby fireboxes every few hours and paying a kings ransom every time something breaks....A few tips:

They have been heating this way for 40 or so years we are just catching up.
If you know what it means to heat with wood your are 2/3rds the way there - these are better.
The different brands - I've looked at most of them CB, Hardy, Shafer...and I bought a Royal.
I love stainless for my boat not so much when you consider an OWB lifecycle hot/cold/hot/cold/hot/cold.....
This will be expensive.  Whatever you are planning to spend add 30%.  No matter how I tried to save money - doesn't happen.
Buy the best supply lines you can afford (thermopex for me - going rate 14 bucks a foot)
I'm putting my boiler in a wood shed here it is on the pad...(see picture) better to load out of the weather and a place to keep a cord or so real dry and warm...
Go bigger everything boiler, lines, pumps, exchangers.....you can always slow the water down not always speed it up easily.

Good luck,

Jamie

I'm hot and heavy into the install now.  Got my thermopex and am lighter 1k but hopefully it pays off in less wood ..Here is the question please let me have it - I need your opinions:

1 story rancher with crawl - have my boiler lines in and connected to my 1" copper trunk in the crawl - now I'm using a plate exchanger on the demand domestic hot water first and then on two two water to air exchangers.  Is there any good reason to bring the plate exchanger up into the washroom with the water tank?  Can I just plumb everything in the crawl?  If the answer is yes I have go up and then back down to catch the water to air exchangers in the ducks (I plan to pull them in the summer when calling for air restriction and freezing) Thoughts?

Thanks a ton,

Jamie

PS for bleeding air from the system - I thought to extend a air bleeder off of a T to the plate exchanger above the water heater.  On line not elbows valves and all.

Thanks guys.

Crawl space is insulated and considerably warmer than outside..

I went with Thermopex from a CB dealer in town I didn't even know about!  11 bucks a foot.  Going copper 1" thru the crawl and up to the domestic loop.  I have a friend who does commerical HVAC and has the crimping tool for coppper.   Any comments on using copper, other than cost? I plan to hang it in the crawl aqnd insulate the hell out of it.

Here are a few more questions I have:

1- Where is everone getting the urecon, logsto, pex-flex and or therompex from these days.  No local dealer here in NJ looking for some recomendations and rough prices.

2- My boiler is 65 feet from my crawl space and another 85 feet to my DHW and my first air handler - Do I need to run the expensive underground insulated pex to the DHW?  Or can I come in an insulate regular pex myself?  Any opinions experience?

Thanks again great site - can't wait to be heatin up xowm H2O!

Any feedback suggestions on American Royal Stoves?  I was able to pick one up at a close out price , brand new, for under 4k....I have the pad poured and the unit set.  Seeing if anyone has any experience with this brand and model 7400.  This is a great site and I'm reading all I can - learning a ton - I appreciate it.

Thanks for the help,

Is this still available?  Does the pex have O2 barrier?  I have a business I run out of my shop - what do you constitute commercial?  I have a loader and unload from a tractor trailer...let me know getting ready to buy a bunch..

Thanks,

Jamie
