General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Plate exchangers
« on: January 05, 2013, 05:13:48 PM »
The CLR web site says it will take the finish off copper and Aluminum ???  I have both copper and Aluminum heat exchangers in my loop...  Will it harm the metal or the solder joints ??  And when you use it how much do you dilute it ??

I have Farm water ...LOL...Hard well water. What can I add to the water in the boiler to soften it ?

I have a 10 plate exchanger I used to heat my water going into the water heater. I have discovered it is full of lime.  I have been told that the 10 plate is to restrictive for use in the loop. Question...what size do most people on here use ? AND...has anyone ever had there Water to air heat exchangers in there furnace lime up??  I just wonder if cycling a CLR mix or something like that through the exchangers would be a good idea once a year ??

Yes !! I took it apart and was plugedabout half.  I just by-passed it !  took it out of the loop.  Air temp is about 15 degrees warmer now. ( about 115 degrees) Am happy..... Still getting about 40 degrees Differance between the supply side of the coil to the return ??  Is this ok  ???

OH and I have shut the ball valves compleatly off the the exchanger in the addition...that makes no differance to the air temperature in the original house furnace ?

I have a 10 plate heat exchanger for use on my water heater. Is it possible for the exchanger to plug up or cause enough restriction to keep the heat coil on my furnace, ( whih is the next thing the water passes )  to not be able to reach temp ???  I am only getting about 90 degree air out of the redgester.  The other Heat exchanger / Furnace for my addition which is teed into the water line with ball valves to adjust the flow from the boiler. it is First in the line,  It is nice and warm out there.

and I get almost a 40 degree temp drop accross the coil i think isnt getting enough water ??  it just acts like to me there isn't enought water passing through that one coil ?

So do you think I need a bigger pump....  How much GPH or GPM  Should I be looking for ?    The boiler I have runs water through the door to cool it... wouldn't take nothing to remove a hose and fill a 5 gallon bucket and time it ?

Yes it is an 00R Taco pump...  Last winter was my first year and I ran it on LOW all year, but we had a warm winter here in Indiana last winter.  My house stays warm but the furnace will run for about 20 minutes to raise it 2 degrees. But the addition furnace will run for about 5 minutes to do the same work.

I always thought the faster the pump ran the less heat it will pull out of the water..is this night right ?

Just wondering what you guys are getting for an air temp reading at your register. I have two heat exchangers/Furnaces...2 separate duct runs, ( 2 totaly seperate systems ) with the first one being " T d" into the line with ball Valves to adjust the flow to the first exchanger. I am trying to Balance both units and about the best I can get is 95 degrees?(Air Temperature) Boiler temp is set at 170....with a 10 degree diff...Boiler is set at about 80 feet From the house and I use a 3 speed Taco pump set on the second speed.

Doesn't work to bad but the original house take a lot longer to reach temp than the Addition does, But the addition is about 1/2 the size of the original house.
Just wondering....

Plumbing / Re: Second furnace plumbing?

the T goes up to the First heat exchanger....the straight part of the T goes on to the next Furnace. You are Sharing the water but the next heat exchanger still get the benifit of all the heat in the line. If you run it in series then the second heat exchanger only gets the return water from the fist which is alot cooler.  I can supply a drawing if you need me to....I know I dont explain stuff well .....LOL

One thing I liked about mine was the Door...It is as large as the fire box for easy Clean out and loading. When you open it there is no ledge to mess with. And also they circulate water through it to recover some heat and also to cool the door to avoid warping.

I also have 2 furnaces in the house. When the 2 pex lines come in it Ts' up to the first Heat exchange. Then continues on to the water heater Plate exchanger then to the last furnace. At the T... I have a Valve in Both Supply line and return, but really only One is needed in the Return. I have the Valve closed about half way to limit the water flow. The excess is then forced on down the line. This is my first year but it is working fine, and I am very happy with the set up.

One thing to check...Mine builds creasote around the door edge. When the door shuts it is between the gasket and the door frame. This makes an air gap because the creasote is holding the door slightly open.... I use a shovel ( not the best tool )  To scrape the bulid up off the door frame, a puddy khife would be a better tool for the job.

I too Have the Maverick temperature dual probe. I used electrical tape to tape it to the pex tight then insulated over it. It is constantly about 10 degrees cooler than the boiler. I am just betting that its just not as accurate as the one on the stove. I just use it to see how low the temp is. Kind of gives me an Idea of how fast the Dog and I need to get our butts out there in the morning.
