Congrats peeworm, your going to love the furnace. I have the mountain man 500 and love it!
It's easy to operate and maintain and in my opinion built like a tank, heavy duty. This is my first year with it and because of this website and all the helpful people involved it went very smooth. It's a grate place to chat and learn. Happy burning!!!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: looking for OWB in PA
« on: March 27, 2013, 03:34:58 PM »
Hey fellow future burner, I live in Pa. and I went with the earth mountain man 500 and have no regrets. I didn't want a gasser and found out if the furnace has grates and ash door it can be used as a coal burner and in Pa. theres no EPA emissions on a coal burner or if the furnace is 350,000 btu's that also makes it exempt and would be legal in many states. Also on earth outdoor wood furnace web site they have a EPA Phase 2 furnace called Klear Sky 400 they just came out with. I have no idea of it but all I know is that if its built like there other furnaces, like the mountain man 500 I have it should last along time as I hope mine does. There built like a tank over all weight at 2300 lbs and easy to operate.

Scott7m got a question for you. How long do you think this coal loop hole will last before the EPA steps in and in a old post you mentioned you might become a dealer for earth. What are your thoughts on earth? I'm very happy with mine and last time I called earth they say they have a EPA phase 2 boiler and already have a few sold.

I live in Pa. and had issues with my township. I wanted a non gasser simply because of less maintenance and less hassle of keeping the fire going. I know people with gasser's and a lot aren't happy with them. I found out on Shaver's web site if you purchase a OWB with grates and ash pan it can be used for coal and there's no EPA emissions on a coal stove in Pa. and other states. Also if the OWB is 350,000 btu's that also would be legal. I then purchased the earth mountain man 500 and love it as its very simple to use and maintain. It's also built like a tank. Just the weight of the unit sold me on it as is why I believe its a heavy duty OWB. Hope this helps out and good luck.

Where are you from brohnson, I'm from Pa. and had the same issue's with my township. I wanted a simple burner and through research I found out in Pa. and other states if u purchase a OWB with grates and a ash pan it can be used as a coal burner and in Pa. there are no EPA emissions on a coal burner. I don't know the regulations where you live. If you want a burner that's a EPA phase 1 something simple check with your state regulations and and see if you can install one with grates and a ash pan it might be legal as a coal burner. I found this info on Shaver's web site then I purchased a Earth and I'm very happy. Hope this helps out and good luck.

Good news today from earth, I called them today about my warranty info and water test results and everything's good to go, they also informed me they have a EPA phase 2 boiler now and their currently updating their web site. Can't wait to see the specs on it and future products. This gives me confidence they will be around for a long time, and I hope so. I'm very happy with my furnace from them as its heavy duty and very simple to run and maintain. Happy burning fellow OWB'ERS!!!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: EPA exempt question?
« on: January 22, 2013, 05:29:11 PM »
If this help here's what I know. I've been wanting the earth mountain man 500 for a couple years and it wasn't EPA phase 2 compliant so I had a few issues with my zoning officials. I've done research and the info I've found on Shaver's web site helped me get the earth mountain man 500. If you purchase a furnace with grates and a ash pan it can be used for coal and there are no EPA emissions on a coal burner in Pennsylvania and if the burner is over 300,000 btu's that also makes it exempt of state laws also. So thanks to Shaver and their website and the research I've done I got the OWF I've been wanting and it works great!!! I've also learned a lot off this site and the outdoorwoodboiler.com site also. A lot of people here are on that site also. It's a grate community and they make you feel like family. I hope this helps you out and if you have more questions I'm sure someone will be gladly to help out, that's why I check these sites out daily, there's always good info and great knowledge.

Northeast Pennsylvania and we had a hi of 18 and the low tonight is 8 . First year with the  earth mountain man 500 and we're loving it! The house is set at 72 and it stays at 72 with a warm even consistent heat, also heating DHW and with no shortage. Best investment I made as a home owner and its already paying it's self off. I've been wanting this unit for a couple years now and thanks to this site and all the helpfull people involved the growing pains haven't been to bad. Still learning and thanks everyone for the good info. Stay warm everyone and happy burning!!!

Hey bud u won't be disappointed with earth, I'm new to this site, and new to the owb world and I love the mountain man 500. Easy to get started and easy to maintain. I average two load sessions a day in the mid 20's temps. But what I like with earth is the 1/2 inch fire box and grate system I also burn coal. It's built like a tank and performs flawless.
