Looks good. How many cord? I figure my pallet racks like yours which are made out of three pallets holds 1/3 of a cord each. How many cords were you going through with the 250? I can't imagine your going to save a whole lot more than what you were getting with that.

Looks good. I need more racks but i build mine out of steel whenever I can get enough scrap. I still have two trucks to cut up from under augers the wind got and flipped over.

Only thing here is I keep mine along driveways or on cement, even with the tracked skid steer the yard would be tore all to hell when its wet.

I've got a whole lot of tin that I just pulled off an old roof. Do you think it makes a big difference covering the top?

Most of those pallets are 4ft by 4 ft. I try and stay at 22" for stuff that needs splitting and 24" for stuff that doesn't, so they are dam close to half cord each. The 250 had "issues" and used up 13 cord last year.

In the first pick I built some pile covers with used roofing, just screw the broken pallets together, can lift right of with the tractor.

Mine aren't the true 4x4 size. They are 40x48 I think. That's the common size I believe. The 4x4 is hard to come by. I found that using 1 piece of 1x3 strapping across the top in the front then a X brace of 1x3 strapping across the back tieing them together works. How did you tie yours? What was the issue with the 250 eating so much?

I just use a 2x6 across the top with cleats screwed too the ends so they are removable.

Absolutely. I burn a lot of maple from an old sugar bush, some of which can be quite punky. If I store it under cover, it is dry in a few months. If I leave it open, is will still be punky even after a much longer period. Keeping the rain off the stack makes all the difference.

I would think that pinky wood would have to be covered because it would soak up water like a sponge. Solid hardwood I wouldn't think would soak up much if any water. I could see the water soaking the wood lower down in the pile though and not drying out for a few days.

That's true, but it also applies to solid pine. I have a lot of pine that had to be cleared so I burn it in the fall and spring. If I cover the pile, it is dry when I need it. If I don't, it will barely burn. Wood just seems to cure better when covered. YMMV. :)

That's how I usually do it , come October or so I cover all my stacks with tin roof and leave the sides open. Seems to work better than tarps for me anyway.
