Central Boiler / Re: E1400 Crack Found
« on: May 10, 2015, 02:26:58 PM »
Roger - I have a few cracks in my 2300's airbox as do other C.B. owners on other forums. Mine appeared in my 2nd year of use which was 3 years ago.

Prolly burn for about three more weeks then run the oil burner as needed to finish the season off. We just can't seem to shake these high temps in the 30s though it's supposed to jump well into the 50s over the next week.
Could save about $50.00 per month burning all summer to produce dhw, but I can't stand opening the firebox door on a hot humid July day plus the smoke blowing in the house through open windows. :( I'll pay the $50.00 for a break from this thing! ;D

We have radiant under hardwood in parts of our house on it's own zone. Best advice I can give is set it and forget it. Buy a good Uponor tstat and leave at one temp.

Thanks Slim and Happy Easter to everyone out there. (Are we still allowed to say this or are we offending someone?) ;)

HeatMaster / Re: G200 or 400 reviews

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully it's at least a few years before I need to replace my unit but when I do Heatmaster will be strongly considered. Looks like a great boiler.

Slim, what are the upper limits of the G100? I know you probably hate using square footage as a guide but wondering if it would heat a well insulated 2000 sq ft house plus dhw. I realize your shooting from the hip without knowing more details.
Thanks

Love these posts! I'm sure all you self employed people out there can feel my pain when it comes to quarterly tax payments. :'(
I've heard it said that if everybody had to pay quarterly, there would be a tax revolt. >:(
That's why they hit you up for a little bit every week.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Insulating basement ceilings

Roger, I used a product called Clean Space by Owens Corning on my dirt crawlspace floor. Almost like a pool liner, it covers the floor and wraps up and is secured to the foundation walls to form a good vapor barrier. Though it's meant as a vapor barrier, it seems to give me some insulating value. Much nicer than crawling around on wet dirt, I also sprayed the rim joist. Pouring concrete down there wasn't practical.

Fire Wood / Re: Wood Consumption vs. Application

I'm in the same boat KK. I ripped through another cord in the last 2 weeks. That's normal for me in mid January not March. Looks like most of us are going to see a warm up soon. Limping through the rest of the year.

Corneroffice  (or anyone else interested)- e-mail me  jeffg77@roadrunner.com  I'll pass on some pics.  I just used 1-1/2" piping.  Works well, easily removable/replaceable.  Cost, generally under $150 and should get you 1 to 2 seasons.  Something anybody can put together with few tools.  Only tough part the first time might be cutting out the back portion of the old channel.  Happy to help if I can.

Jeff
Jeff, is that to relocate the air holes to the top of the firebox so they don't fill the air tube up with junk?
Thanks

5th year with CB 2300. Factory upgrades were done when I got it.
I've only replaced wear items- 2 solenoids, firebox door gaskets and refractory on reaction chamber door. Been a good boiler.
After year 4 I broke even on my investment. This is finally payback year and hope to get at least 5 more years out of it.

Solar gain works well in vehicles too. Nice to get into a nice warm truck for lunch yesterday. Didn't even start it up while I ate.

Roger, That doesn't sound like you to be slacking on your cleaning! You must be busy. ;) I've been on a good schedule this year cleaning the heat exchangers every 2 weeks and cleaning the main air tube once a month. It seems to be helping on temp. recovery times.
With frequent cleanings, the exchangers don't accumulate much junk and make cleaning fast and easy.
My primary air elbow seems to be getting pitted- I'm wondering if it's going to develop a hole. I probably will replace at the end of the season. Has anyone else seen this?
