Non EPA phase 2 boilers from Canada
« on: February 23, 2015, 07:20:24 AM »

I haven't seen this mentioned yet in the topic of EPA phase 2, conventional boilers being discontinued.
My question regards the fact that this is "not yet" happening in Canada but I am sure it will make its way north.
Is this on the horizon for Canada? When?
Will Canadian companies like Portage and Main and Heatmaster continue to build conventional boilers with a much smaller market?
Will the American companies be able to manufacture a conventional unit for export only?
How long do the OEM's have to make replacement parts for conventional units after this phase out happens? ( I think the auto OEM's are ten years, not positive)

It's not really a topic of discussion on a national level here but I have seen some municipalities introduce by-laws regulating outdoor wood furnaces. Although a lot of our laws tend to follow changes in the US, I can't see conventional boilers being banned across the country for a while considering the influence of farmers and rural residents in Northern areas. If I was a US resident I would take advantage of the low Canadian dollar and come on up and pick one up.

Before buying my stove,I asked the local municipality [McKellar Ont.] if there were any restrictions on boilers,,,? they said,,, on what.???
I then explained it was an outdoor, wood burning, appliance.
They said if I didn't burn wood,,, I was pretty much alone......

The few thousand people around here are represented by 1 m.p., one seat,, and this goes on all over the north and rural areas of Canada.
A Few voters with lots of clout, in the big picture.

People in T.O. don't give a crap what we do up here,, it's two different worlds

Don't think OWB will be outlawed here, for a long time?

So  far, conventional OWB's are not on anyone's radar.  I don't think they will be outlawed anytime soon.
KK is right, T.O. doesn't care what happens here - at least not in the winter.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss this. Manitoba has already banned all coal burning stoves effective 2016. The government is coming for us too. Worse yet is that even if you have one you can no longer use it!!!

How would they police that? Would they knock on your door and make you stop using it? I hope it doesn't come to that.. If they do that will they pay for a new way of heating?

They don't even make us smog check our cars here [Parry Sound and north Ontario]
We are few, but have many seats in Ottawa.
Gonna be a while before they can outlaw wood smoke.

And..... we do pay tax on firewood, it's just hidden in property taxes.
And if you buy it ...the price per cord.
Saw that on another thread but can't find it"

Not sure about the other states out of 50, but Indiana hasn't had smog or safety checks on vehicles in a long time, I wouldn't mind seeing either again to be perfectly honest as I've seen some real pieces of crap out and about that had no business being on the road.

KK, I was at the Ottawa farm show last spring and a dealer from Quebec said they were not going to be able to sell conventional boilers. Maybe he was mistaken? I believe it will happen here, it's just a matter of time.
Also as far as TO is concerned, has anything the Ontario Liberals done made sense? Something like would be perfect for them. It's two different worlds all right, but they won't let us make our own rules.

For sure! Where I live we have emission testing but next county from me does not. It is a ten minute drive and same thing some real gems on the road.
So how much pollution is coming from all the POS cars driven who knows how much and how far, vs the boilers that are running late Oct through May?

There are bigger things to worry about, like the forest fires I know most are done on purpose all though my local DNR sets fires on purpose. Are they going to ban that?

I guess I can see the end of conventional boiler sales.
I still think I will be burning wood till I can't cut it any more.

Harris, Bob Rae .......... go for it,,,,,, there's no solution bud

Was stuck behind one a few months ago kept having to clean my windshield from all the oil it was burning.

I could see the outcry though, get some of this crap off the road and it would hurt those that are most "financially disadvantaged". Of course buying oil doesn't cost anything not to mention some of those clunkers can't be getting that good of mileage.
