General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / PEX Heat Loss
« on: February 08, 2009, 06:43:27 AM »
My system is several years old.  When bit the bullet the nice new PEX systems with the corrugated pipe surrounded the insulation wasn't really around and people at that time weren't sure how much that system would be better.  If I had to go back I'd have coughed up the extra money and put something in like that.  That being said, does anyone have the typical markings of your heating lines in the ground just before a good freeze or thaw.  In other words, the area where my lines go is the last to freeze and the first to thaw.  I 1.25" pex running through the round insulation, then wrapped with vinyl.  Pretty standard stuff at the time.  I'm just curious how much better the "ThermoPex" type systems work.

I only have to go about 35 feet to my stove so at some point replacing my lines could be an option if it would be a benefit.  Locally I've talked to a few folks that have had their stoves for longer than me and they have the same problem, but they don't have the fancy stuff either.  Oh, I went right at the depth specified at the time, which wasn't more than 2.5 feet but can't remember exactly what it was.  I remember we had a hard freeze that year and it was like digging through a big chunk of concrete..hehe.

Equipment / Wood Truck

What do you use to haul your wood?  Do you have an old beater with a big flatbed or something new and reliable pulling a trailer?

I have something in between I guess.  '97 F-250 Crew cab, 7.5 liter gas engine.  It's in pretty good shape so I don't beat it up but I've had it in a hole or two accidently.  I usually pull a trailer that I can beat up a bit so I don't worry too much about filling my little 6.5' bed.

A big one ton with a flatbed would be nice, you can get almost 2 normal truckloads on one of those...

General Discussion / Wood Gitter

PhinPhan, I finally bit the bullet.  I'll have to run out sometime and retrieve some wood deep on the other end of the property for you.  And while we're at it, strap in and go for a ride.

How's the Woodmaster doing in this cold weather?  I'm eating up some oak this week.  It doesn't bother me as long as I still have a nice pile to pick from.  Just curious about your new money saver.

Site Suggestions / Get the word out
« on: November 06, 2008, 04:31:06 AM »
Folks,

I think we should get the word out about this site.  Someone has taken some time to start a great information site and we should use it.  Tell your OWB friends about it and send in some site suggestions.  I even know people who plan on trying to make electricity with an OWB so the possibilities may be endless.  We have have some experience in weird happenings or installs and could share some vital information to new and experienced users.  Let's try to make this a great resource for OWB owners on the web.
