Shaver Furnace / Re: Leaking
« on: January 31, 2012, 05:35:40 PM »
You need to seal inside the DHW plate. If you remove the plate, you will see the gap that is on the inside, right at the edge of where the plate covers.

As the water get hot, it builds up condensation. The water then drips down this gap between the water jacket and the insulation.

I had problems with mine leaking when I first got it. I ripped the sideing and insulation off the back, only to find that water was seeping in from the top where that gap is.

This is hard to explain. Just remove the DHW plate from the back and fill in the gap with silicone. You can't see the gap until the plate is removed.

Shaver Furnace / For those with too much creosote in the chimney
« on: December 08, 2011, 11:17:11 AM »
Here is what I did a couple years ago. I trimmed the sheet metal around the chimney and slid this bad boy down over the chimney
http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(alslozy1x5lpdx55wmktsxit)/ProductDetails.aspx?SKU=45065&&SessionExpired=True

I slid it clear down to rest on the water jacket. I shoved some rope gasket between the existing chimney and the double wall pipe. I then squirted some high temp silicone around it too. This was to keep anything from running down between the pipes.

I then resealed around the chimney and roof with high temp silicone.

At the end of the season i do get a little build up that I scrape out but I have never had it plug shut.

Instead of drilling a hole for the washer, just use some silicone as if it were glue and glue/silicone the washer in place. It can be removed with a knife if you need to.

the black liquid is normal and is from condensation. It will go away after a while. I get it every year when i fire up the boiler.

I heard that Shaver changed the overflow tube/vent. I am not sure if this is true though. My shaver is 4 years ols and the tube/vent comes out of the side near the refill valve.

Anyway......

The over flow tube as it comes with the furnace allows the whole surface of the water in the water jacket to be exposed to the air. This allows more water to evaporate.

If you put an 90*elbow on the tube and add some more water, then only that little bit of water surface inside the elbow is exposed to the air. Much, much less evaporation.

Here is how I did mine. I got a 3 inch piece of 1" pex and slid over the overflow tube. I then got a semi clear plastic 90* elbow from Tractor Supply and put in the end of the pex. I secure with two hose clamps and put silicone (for plastic) and put around joints to prevent leaks.

I can now see my water level inside the elbow. I added seveal more gallons of water and raised the water level to where it is slightly higher then the top of the factory vent tube.

I just finished heating our third season with the Shaver 165.
Before we got it, we had a couple years heating with combination indoor wood burner and oil heat.

How nice it is to just crank up the thermostat and have the whole house warm and toasty. Before, we always kept the stat turned down so we could save on heating oil.

Be sure to check out the mods in the other threads. They will turn your Shaver into a different machine.

In the mean time, better get busy on that wood pile, LOL!    ;D

Workman,

Hey, welcome to the site!

To save myself a bunch of typing check out this thread

http://outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com/forum/index.php?topic=756.0

You will see my post with links to the blower mod and some other mods.

With the blower mod, will be better off to also do the Ranco thermostat mod to regulate the temp and the blower better.

The link to the thread will explain things better.

Some people also do a slightly different blower mod using a solenoid to open the flap.

My mod is a dryer vent and has a cost of less than $20 for all the parts to do it.

My 011 lasted 2 seasons. I replaces the cartridge this season and also got a spare.

The cartridges are almost as much as a whole new pump!      :-\

Yes that hedge is about the best wood you can get. It is a little rough on chains and really throws the sparks.

I always got to be extra careful when reloading the Shaver, when the previous load had hedge in it. Those little sparks seem to find their way under my shirt collar or in my hair....LOL!

The staem out the over flow is normal but it becomes a problem if it steams lots and you have to keep adding water.

When you had that curved rubber hose, it allowed you to put in more water until it got deep enough to flow out the DHW cover plate.

If you find it is steaming away too much water, I would just put the rubber hose back on but not fill as full as you had it before.

Also read this thread.

It'll show you a way to stop the steaming and be able to see the water level.
